Re: Cur lion dog

Kemmers are extremely versatile dogs if you get one from big game lines. I have used mine on all game plus cows, in all conditions and they have done good for me. Intelligent, great winding and trail dogs, great handling dogs. My lead dog is a 100% Kemmer and the best all round hunting and working d...

Re: Starting From Scratch

Great posts! I too started from scratch more than a few years ago, it's been a long, slow, hard process but worth it every step of the way. It was especially hard for me since I started with other peoples' trash, their throw-away dogs, plus a couple pups I raised on my own. I'm still learning and so...

Re: Just for fun

I hunt Plotts and curs (have one Kemmer and one Catahoula right now) and a Black and Tan in northern Ca. All legal game, including hog and coon. Also have a retired catch dog (American pit bull) I use to decoy coyotes with.

Great looking dogs, thanks for sharing! Nothing matches a good cur dog for grit and loyalty for sure.

Re: please help squeakin fox

IT IS LEGAL in CA!! ; You can use mouse, bird, rabbit, fox pup distress, electronic or use your voice, early in the morning of in the evening about an hour before dark. Keep the sound going for a couple minutes, stop, wait a couple minutes, start again. If they're around, they are fairly easy...

Re: question on deer breaking

Some of the best dogs I've ever owned were the worst deer runners at one point in time! The key to deer breaking is to catch them in the act, progressing to stopping them the instant they think about trashing. They can smell a deer track, but they can't think about following it with the intent to ch...

Re: Cur lion dog

Kemmers from big game stock work well on all game. Curs tend to be extremely smart and easy to train, had an old Catahoula Cur that was the best multi purpose dog I've ever known. Not all curs will open on track, the Kemmers and leopards usually do though.

Re: Curs not cold nosed enough?

The curs I've had are about equal in scenting ability to my Plotts, but not as cold nosed as the Walker and Black/Tan I have had. Generally they are medium nosed, and they can definitely track big game. I would not call them hot nosed at all. Although there are hot nosed lines (mostly squirrel bred ...

Looking to buy out-of-print hound books!

Hi, I'm looking to add to my collection of hound books...I have just about everything currently in print. Looking to buy or out-of-print books, including "Life of the Greatest Guide" "Call of the Hounds" (Cameron) Anything by Obe Cory "Brave" (Matthes) "Lion Tales&...

Re: Neuter? or not to neuter

Since I am a hunter only and not a breeder, I spay all my females but leave the males intact. There are both advantages and disadvantages to fixing a dog. Your dog is only 8 months and his sex drives are just kicking in and probably doesn't have a lot of control over it--think of a preteen kid. I wo...

Re: Thinking about adding a cur

I hunt both hounds and curs and will always have both in my pack. Personally I prefer a good hound, they tend to be more consistent as a group (meaning it's easier to find good big game hound with all the right "stuff" from the right breeding than it is a cur) and I love a big bawl mouth a...
