Re: Black and Tans

Could you be a bit more specific in what kind of info you're looking for?

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

I've also wondered if a BMC wouldn't be too protective, I'm kinda leaning towards a mountain cur or bmc mix. David, if you could get me in contact with your friend in MT, I'd love to visit with him! Where at in MT is he?

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

Haha, I'd like to hear them blue ticks behind a bunch of cows! It probly makes the neighbors wonder a little bit about you, doesn't it?! I've always had black and tans, they go with me everywhere, and I've had several that would chase a cow if you told them to, but they weren't herding, just chasing...

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

It's always good to know the pup went to a good home! I still have two of her littermates, I think I'll retire one this winter, he'd just assume to ride around in the swather all summer, and the tractor all winter! The other one, I'm gonna try and hunt one more year, that's why I'm looking for somet...

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

I've never heard of anybody using a Shepard or collie for treeing game, I'll look into them, though, for sure.

Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

I'm looking for a cur dog to add to my pack, something that will tree a cat, but be able to work cows some, too. From what I've read on the Google, a Blackmouth Cur might be what I'm looking for. Traits that I'd like to find are something that's at least medium nosed, trees decent, easy to handle, a...

Big Sky Curs, Belgrade, MT

Does anyone here know anything about Dennis Biggs, out of Belgrade? He breeds Blackmouth Curs, and I'd like to know if he's the real deal or not. I'm looking for a dog that's more versatile as a ranch dog, but will still hunt. His website portrays the exact type of dog I'm looking for, I'd just like...

Re: Side by Side

How fast does the pioneer go with tracks on it? It makes sense that it's more reliable, since it isn't belt drive. The people that I know that run Polaris just about all have two machines, so they have something to use when the other is in the shop.

Re: Side by Side

Personally, I think the side x sides are a huge waste of money. By the time you get a new one with a heated cab and tracks, you're into it for 25 - 30k, if you get a used one, you'll pay half of that for one that's 2/3 wore out. I've been getting by with little Nissan pickups that I can get for 3k o...

Re: Side by Side

I finally got to ride with a friend in his ranger crew with tracks, they're sure nice to get around in, but don't expect to get anywhere fast. Keep in mind you'll be tooling around in low range most of the time, to keep from burning a belt, so around 15 mph is about all you'll get. If I was gonna bu...

Re: Do everything cur dog

Thanks again for all the replies. Here's a question for you.... What's the biggest difference in hunting with curs instead of hounds?

Re: Black n tan characteristics

I was in your shoes when I first got hounds. Ihad zero experience training a scent hound, I'd never been in on a chase, nothing. All I knew was that I wanted to be a groundsman. What I did have, was an abundance of bobcats in our area back then, so instead of using hides to lay scent trails, I used ...

I'm interested in this UBD! It sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll look for the other threads on them and do some reading.

What's a UBD?
I've heard of Bob Fogel, he's down south somewhere, right?

Do everything cur dog

I'm looking for any advice in selecting my next dog. I have black and tan hounds now, and I use them for bobcats and lions, in the snow, mostly. Recently I've thought that it'd be nice to have a dog that is useful year-round, instead of just during cat season. What I'd like, is a dog that can do it ...
