Re: Running bobcat with catahoulas
I have an old Catahoula cross that will tree cats by herself...my pure Mtn Curs and my B&T are much more consistent in my experience. She is good at winding a scent and will find layups before the others though...She is silent till she's looking at a critter. She's a much better coon/bear dog but ...

Re: Track ID
Any otters in the area? Look like they could be otter tracks if not coon.

Re: Blue Heelers
I had a cow dog cross that I tried to train with the hounds, all she did was chase critters by sight if at all, and when she got bit she just backed off and then ran away. Not much of a hunting drive and zero interest in trailing. Sure turned into a different dog when she saw cows or sheep around ...

What was it that definitely impressed you? Was there anything that made you to believe that they were well-rounded and beneficial.Or was it the fact that they are so ignorant, and kama-kazi like that it becomes suicidal ...

Re: catch dogs???
I too would recommend some good gritty cur dogs...fast, smart, tough...know when to bite which end, and when to get out of the way. I have a little 40 pound runt mountain cur, all heart, that will tree just about any bear--and our bears have a reputation for not treeing. Have not had a bear get away ...

Re: Train your own.
I started from scratch for every one of my dogs, some turned out great, some okay, and one was completely worthless (that I think was the individual dog's fault, but you need to weed through sorry dogs to get to the good ones!) I think it's far more rewarding as a hunter to see your own dogs, raised ...

Re: pill for infection
Amoxicillin is the best from personal experience (or clavamox), have also used Cephalexin with good results if I run out...I work at the vet's so I pretty much can get whatever is needed!

Re: what do you bring in your hunting back.
In the field first aid kit for dogs and me (have almost a full vet clinic packed in the Jeep--do a lot of long hunts away from home when I can!), water, snacks, socks, gloves, headlamp, extra headlamp, batteries, Bowie knife, skinning knife, pistol, extra ammo, electrical tape (that black stuff, has ...

Cool photos. That last dog looks like he's been around the block a few times...
Have only seen two in person on hogs and they definitely impressed me. I hear they are very expensive to buy though... Personally will stick to gritty cur dogs that will trail, run and fight all day and my reliable ole ...

Re: California's last weekend. how'd ya do?
I was having a hard time finding places that weren't thick with deer! My pups were doing real good about not running deer, but would give chase if they spooked a deer...and the deer seemed to be really thick close to the end of the season. Wasn't fair to them...but that's how they learn I guess ...

Re: California's last weekend. how'd ya do?
I thought it was over too soon! Since winter started so late...wish we still had another month left. Been treeing a lot in windy conditions, the pups ( 1 year and 1.5 years) really started to turn on near the end of the season.
