Re: Free casting on foot

Mr Peyton, after bear season here in the western carolina mountains I do a good amount of coyote chasing, that is if we cant find a bobcat track! And I do say coyote chasing for a reason. Unless there is more than 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, which is pretty rare down here, it's tough for a man...

Hound hunting newsletter for university website

After a heated argument with a professor regarding hunting bear with hounds, I had an assignment in other class to write a newsletter where the best one will be chosen and put on the schools webpage. I decided that after listening to a professor jam his uneducated opinions down the throats of my ign...

Re: Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

I had to zoom out a ways so idk if you can tell. I marked truck right where I turned out. And in that blob section is where they got hung up, I've been told there are some bluffs through there. Where it starts to make the bend back around, it went straight to the creek bottom ( couldn't get that par...

Re: Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

dholster, I'm glad you told me about that (gps track) I had no idea! You can see I'm pretty ignorant lol. If the hunt I ant cleared I'll try and get a pic of the race. Generally a deer in that particular area will run straight down the creek. I've seen it myself and a veteran bear hunter who I had t...

Re: Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

Well I was finally able to get out to spot that didn't have any dog boxes this saturday. Some stretch of luck I found a good track no more than 10 minutes from leaving the truck. Turned both dogs loose and away they went. At first they went straight up the mountain into some nasty rock bluffs for ab...

Re: Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

Well the sunshine here in the Appalachians finally went away and the rain came in so I have some time for a few updates. This past week or so has been pretty good to us. Still very crowded around here so I've just been going out and free casting in areas with either river bottom or lots of rocks and...

Re: Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

first week of bear bobcat and coon season: I tried to bear hunt opening day but there was a dog box on every trail and my garmin was overwhelmed with all the tracking collars in the area so I decided to just coon hunt the first week and stay out the way of the guys who know what they're doing. I'll ...

Starting my biggame pack: weekly log

I'm just starting to finally get a small a pack together. Its been a slow process being a broke college kid but Im making progress and this will be my first real season. Re: what to look for

Mr John, do yall just freecast into these clearcuts and powerlines, or do you look for a set of tracks to turn on? Also how do your dogs do switching from trailing bear to bobs, I assume it could be frustrating at first considering the amount of scent left behind. Also a lot of forest land here, but...

Re: what to look for

David, thank you for the insight, certainly sounds like I'm going to have my work cut out for me! He will be used on bear and coon as well, so I guess there will be some give and take if he starts a bear on me hunting in the early morning. I know of some areas that are rocky and thick with brush as ...

what to look for

Looking to get started in the bobcat game, I have a 3 year old bluetic (Upson) he's done a bang up job on coons but thats about all he's been run on. I've done a lot of reading particularly the "starting dogs on bobcat" thread and it gave me hope that it's possible to make a decent dog wit...
