Re: Wolves killed by hunters using dogs.

It definitely is a nightmare to come upon, but unfortunately with the DNR and government is a thing we deal with in wisconsin and any state that has wolves. It has changed the ways people hunt in certain areas or even if people hunt certain areas. But with tracking and finding a lone one or pair. Wh...

Re: Wolves killed by hunters using dogs.

Rickylane06, Wisconsin has had a issues with wolves for years and most who run dogs in this state have first hand experience with what they can do to a dog/dogs or know people that have had it happen too. I think you have to realize when the people are running them they are not putting dogs onto a p...

Re: Cameron Hounds?

Looks like you found the info you are looking for. There is more breeders than that, some you might have to look a little harder. If you read his book I think it tells you where he got his foundation to start the Cameron hound from. I loaned the book out otherwise could tell you.

Re: Cameron Hounds?

I had a dog that was a Cameron hound, I saw the papers. I never took them. But it didn't come from Del himself so I guess not sure if he would agreed with the cross. Good looking blue tick. From my research on the breeding she was on the smaller size of the average dog. She was a easy starter but wa...

Re: Running dogs

I do not think I ever hunted with a pure running dog, just crosses with potlickers. Maybe one day I will if they are better than the crosses it might be worth a shot. Always looking for a way to improve.

Re: Running dogs

The 20 plus mile in maine was 4 to 5 hours and I did have the dogs strung out, and honestly if I remember right the tree dog was leading up until like mile 17, was in and out of service and there was some swamp that messed a couple up. Then this year that 26 mile race was probably over 5 hours at le...

Re: Running dogs

Well I never personally added any running dog to my tree hounds. I am not a dog breeder or do not try to be. But I have a few tree hounds I guess you would call them and then a few running dog crosses..But I guess I have been adding them to make pack because the endurance and speed. They seem to be ...

Re: Running dogs

Mine are all crossed with tree hounds i would say. I do have a a couple with no running dog in them. But to say the pure tree dog compared to the running dog cross is hard for me. I would say right now they are about equal with noses. I am not sure I would say I have cold nose dogs either more mediu...

Re: Running dogs

I believe a lot of people are doing it these days. Adding running dog into their bear dogs or adding full running dogs into their pack. I have a couple with half running dog in them maybe a little less. But I like them because of the endurance and speed. But I can say one took a little longer to sta...

Bear hunting or hound hunting for a living

Hello all, looking to talk to some people that guide or run bears for a living. Or hound hunt for a living. It is a passion of mine and looking to see what avenues there are. Or possibly even do a apprentice ship with a guide for a season to see what it is all about. I have my own equipment and such...

Re: Training bear and cougar hounds! HELP

I don't think I would get to concerned I do very little scent drags if at all used to try them when I had a pup around. Sometimes they would follow and sometimes they wouldn't. I don't always think the scent you buy smells like the actual critter. I have been to some bear trials that the drag goes a...

Re: Turning a Track Around

I have seen it done on bear. I was tagging along with friends last spring in Idaho it was with their dogs. They had a strike, they let a couple dogs out which went off barking good. So they let the rest go. Dogs went in roughly 1/2 mile maybe a little more, and then it got silent. They said shoot th...

Re: Traveling

Thanks for the info, and pointers. Yes you have a training season year round but believe that is residents only. I believe non-residents have some specific dates. I could be wrong thou but thought that is how I read it.

Re: Traveling

I live in Wisconsin. I try to make at least one trip a year to a new area(Or have the last 5 years). I have hunted Ontario Canada, few different spots in Maine, Idaho, and Minnesota. I enjoy looking and hunting new area. I think West Virginia might be next on my list, they have a good training seaso...
