Re: Why a x breed

Macedonia mule man, I know that, and you know that, but try telling it to the guy that moves to a deer dog state from up north and puts a food plot and a tree stand in the middle of his five acres that is wedged between two thousand acre deer club leases.

Re: Why a x breed

You know the rules. If a dog barks on a piece of property the big bucks will leave. If the dogs run deer all the deer will leave, for years. At least that is the way I've had it explained by stand hunters. Funny thing, when you hunt at a deer dog hunt club, a lot of times the shooters vote to run th...

Re: treeing walker for fox

I had a point that pertained to the original post, I promise. Got sidetracked. The Treeing Walker was once, in the 1850's up until maybe the 1950's. a fox dog. From a a fox hunter's perspective, for the dog to be suitable for possum, coon and other game so unsporting as to need to take refuge in a t...

Re: treeing walker for fox

Well on the necessity thing, I think a lot of the people that found it necessary to kill game with dogs to be able to eat weren't in a position to travel long distances to buy dogs, didn't have money to buy dogs, and couldn't invest much into any kind of breeding program. The various cur breeders of...

Re: treeing walker for fox

In general, my advice is to use fox bred dogs for red fox. Most of the tree hounds were developed for game that does not run as long or as fast as a red fox. Because of this; conformation, stamina, and ability to recover were never tested fully. Conformation got very sloppy compared to the fox bred...

Re: treeing walker for fox

This is why houndsmen have packs of hounds. The strengths of one overshadow the weaknesses of the other. They might all be the same breed, different breeds, but putting together the pack relies on picking the strengths and weaknesses and pairing them accordingly. Hard to find it all in one dog, and ...

Re: BobCat patterns on a Garmin?

I hunt with a boy down east. He has deer dogs. Not just dogs that run deer. He spends all year winning competition hunts to keep his dogs in condition. When season hits, he has all his litters weeded through, and he has several different packs that go good together. Different packs get used in diffe...

Re: BobCat patterns on a Garmin?

Enough dogs will stretch a deer, unless it as a big buck that backs up against something. Most deer will bay in water. Takes good dogs to get a healthy adult deer to that point. A lot of dogs don't have the legs or the wind to ever get in that situation. Hard to break a dog off deer if it has ever b...

Re: BobCat patterns on a Garmin?

I agree with you Al. I have heard of more than I've seen. The ones I have seen that I heard about had big flat coon feet, were bow legged, didn't have much muscle at all because they were too sorry to run anything well. That is why they were naturally deer broke. Good on corn field coon, but not muc...

Re: BobCat patterns on a Garmin?

Tree dogs that break themselves off of deer by running deer. Based on my experience, which isn't as much as some here, and largely my opinion, there is a reason for that, if you study them closely. Look at their build, and their feet and legs. Then compare that to the look of a good bred running hou...

Re: Tracking blood or wounded deer

I had an old cur dog that would track shot deer, would only work them on a lead and with constant encouragement. Wouldn't mess with them at any other time, except for one time I was gathering cattle and she had a couple deer in the herd. I will say she was broke for coon and squirrel before I tried ...

Re: Just something I find amusing

I've got myself a lock picking Trigg, I have to keep three different snaps on the gate, and she regularly takes off her collar and takes off the other dogs collar through the fence. Snaps on the water bucket to keep her from knocking it over is just a game. Luckily she doesn't let herself out unless...

Re: Pics, Vids, Stories, anything??

Man that white chested red trigg you got in that pic there Andy is absolutely stunning. I love the way she looks. Nice looking dog. I had one once that kinda looked like her. I didn't get a chance to keep her very long before I had to move and sell out. If I ever get the chance to run dog again I'm...
