Re: The worst hunting jam you've been in
I hunted my Plott Dolly and Walker Lola on foot in the Pisgah National Forest for bear again this year. They had been logging off and on in the area I planned to hunt that day, so I kept an ear to the CB radio on the drive there, and didn’t see any trucks working so I started on my hike around 6am. ...

NC adds right to hunt to constitution
Congratulations to NC for adding the right to hunt and fish to the state constitution. Bonus points for including traditional methods in the wording. Doesn't get any more traditional than hunting bears with dogs in the same mountains roamed by Daniel Boone. "Sec. 38. Right to hunt, fish, and ha...

Re: Pack size for bear hunting
Update: I'm still hunting those same dogs and putting them on tracks. There seem to be more bear moving this fall in the areas I'm hunting and we are having a real good time with it. I'm still trying to get that first one treed on our own. I realized I'm the problem and that freecasting them was not...

leashed dog
Jon Bailey, From reading what you are interested in, and what you have experience with I would get a Labrador Retriever and train him for deer tracking. He will be a fantastic family pet, live to please you, and on the occasion you need him to track a wounded deer, he will take the track and not rip...

Re: Bear Food Plot
I second the opinion about various nut trees and planning to have what you plant bear fruit from sept-nov. you need to attract them, and keep them coming back. I would recommend getting in touch with your local Cooperative Extension office to recommend specific varieties of trees/plants that will do...

Re: What's happening in Ca. without hounds
Does anyone have depredidation data for 2014-2017? I'd like to see how this is trending.
depredeidation kills jumped from 64 to 143 in 2013 to 2014.

Re: NC Training Season
Thank you, I hadn't thought about the mountain bike, that would help get all of us in shape. I'll probably give this a try without the leash. I can see an exciting downhill ride in my future if I keep my female walker on the leash while I'm on the bike. I have put them on the ground behind the subar...

Re: Trapping on Public Land
Hunters & Trappers need to be all on the same team, and manage our conflicts internally. In Western NC we have Aug.15- the end of March to run dogs on public land, during that time period all other hunting/trapping seasons take place a well. There are a couple weeks of deer rifle season where we...

NC Training Season
With NC's training season just around the corner, I'm getting 2 fat dogs ready for the season. I can't turn dogs loose on public land until Aug. 15th. Does anyone have any tips to get dogs back in shape?

Re: New guy "blues"
I have a dog that will free cast and find a coyote, she weighs about 50 lbs, so you can have her delivered to your front door for $986,612.17. All joking aside, my Grace is a treeing walker coonhound out of coon dogs from the great State of North Carolina. Maybe the solution to your problem is raisi...

Re: Pack size for bear hunting
You're right there are a lot of bear in my area. I figured if even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile, why can't an old deer hunter dumb across a bear track every now and again assuming I do my part and put enough miles on my boots. It's nice to see another 828 area code on here, I wi...

Re: Pack size for bear hunting
Thank you, I appreciate the advice. I hunted deer and squirrel for a long time, and when I started getting into this I realized pretty quick I have a lot to learn when it comes to hounds. I took my boys to a youth outdoor festival and met an old man whose family likes to bear hunt. I sat and listene...

Re: Pack size for bear hunting
If you hunt long and hard enough you’ll see a lot of things most “civilized” people only read about in books. I have stopped counting the box turtles, copper heads and other snakes. We have seen red tail hawks, Bald Eagles, several species of wood peckers, and owls in the daytime. When fishing we ha...
