Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

That’s a good story and makes a ton of sense. I didn’t realize it wasn’t legal to run the big cats at that time. Your logic was very sound indeed. It makes you feel good when dogs perform like you know them to.

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

I assume from this story and the others that you preferred bobs over Mt lion? I think
I know the answer, but why do you prefer it?
How old was that walker female when you got her?

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Some people have harsh methods for sure. They usually aren’t the best dog people. Sometimes it isn’t what you think. He thought it was yote and it was a bear. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people take a pup out on its first hunt early because they thought they knew exactly what the hogs ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

It’s funny you mention this. SASS and I were just talking this morning about dogs trashing and methods of correcting that we have seen. My old Clyde dog trashed one time in all the years and it was a real half hearted attempt at that. I heard him bark twice and then say nothing for about 30 seconds ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

It amazes me how much technology we have today and how much more complicated life is. To me, in my opinion, the quality of life is lesser than back in your childhood. I’m sure the adults of that era said things like “what is this world coming to” back then. What would they think if they could see it...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

You know Al, that was a simple life for sure, but it was a good and honest life. A life where priorities were straight and emphasis was put on the right things. It’s a different world all together. A simple life life is nearly unattainable I you are going to make it or teach your children how to get...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Al I remember a hunt that the fella claiming to have killed the 25 and I made. His name was Gordon. Just him and I and we turned dogs out on a place that was farmed and right on Little River. The dogs got bayed on the bank of the river. Just as we were getting to them, the hogs broke bay. Two or thr...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Man Al, I don’t know if it’s you and just have a lot in common or if all hunters share the same type of experiences. I had a friend that was a lot like George. I was just out of high school and lived in an area they called buttermilk flats. I was working for a rural water system at the time and most...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

He sounds like an interesting guy. My Clyde dog was bred to be a cow dog. A local family had a family of what everyone just called old leopard dogs that had gotten too tightly bred and were losing too many good traits. They getting funky in nature, poor bottom, inconsistent working abilities, etc. S...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

The catch dog thing has as many different styles or methods as the bay/strike dogs do. I think it’s one thing that makes it so attractive to different people. Terrain, climate, hunting average, and the tendencies of the hogs themselves has a lot to do with the methods people use. We cast our dogs an...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

I’m glad y’all are doing better. 60 years is impressive to say the least. The hog hunting isn’t as hazardous as it sounds, most of the time. If you have dogs that perform their duties correctly it’s actually pretty controlled. I don’t shoot very often just because I have seen too many good dogs shot...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Man that’s a funny story Al. If you had said Clarence was extremely good looking I would’ve thought you were talking about me lol. Hog hunting isn’t much different than most other big game hunting with dogs. It’s all dangerous if you don’t use your head. I won’t lie, I’ve been in some pretty good fi...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Al, the impressive part of the mean, walking bear story was Belle. Staying with the original bear and not getting brushed off on the second and not being intimidated solo to me is impressive. Tom’s drive is funny to me. I remember a hunt that two buddies and I made 15-20 years ago. We had gone to a ...
