Re: Hog hunting with cat dogs

Putting GOOD varmint dogs intentionally onto pigs. That is a big no for me.
Infrequently I have a young dog or two decide to bay a pig, but I assure you they don't want to get after another when I get ahold of them.
I get pretty serious with them about trash like deer and coyotes, but with pigs all ...

Re: California voters please help

I cannot help you understand this, it is not understandable to anyone without the urban, liberal, progressive mindset. I have tried to understand it and have given up.
Sorry to tell you this Sir, but "I" didn't give the Country anything. It was the majority of the voters in this state (or the ...

Re: Best Dogs...

I have hunted with some darned good varmint dogs, cat and fox. The best dog i have hunted with was several decades back, and of course his name was Blue. He wasn't mine but I hunted him as much as I have ever hunted my own dogs.
What made him the best?
During the time he was alive we were hunting ...

Re: Dog house plans

I have built dog houses using this basic pattern for over 30 years. My father got it from some sled dog guys. No insulation needed in my climate.
I used to use 3/4 inch plywood but now use 5/8. Need to account for the dimension of the plywood in the exact cuts so that it goes together right. Also ...

Re: re-running a fox

hunting that dog by himself is the best thing you can keep doing at this point.
keep getting to the trees as soon as you can.
tying him up at the tree is a good move during the training season.
When you chase the critter out, don't turn him loose unless you are sure he sees it leave out. If it ...

Re: re-running a fox

Biggest issue I have experienced are "run a ways". The dogs get used to the varmint coming out and it doesn't take much for one dog to think it came out, the rest think he is going to get away with it, and away all of them go leaving you there at at the tree looking up at a fox.
Now this can be ...

Re: timber cutting

I set chokers and handled the drop line/hooks for a cable side (cable yarder) for a summer about 20 years ago. I had just come out of high school and was in top shape, and it sure was a good thing. Still took a bit to get aclimated to dragging cable on very steep slopes, fighting brush, and digging ...

Re: Hound outrunning his nose!!

If the dog has the brains to go with such an inherent style, that "swinging wide" can really make him look good if there are big rock piles in the area you hunt. The others are trying to pick it through mess after mess and the dog that swings wide catches the track coming out the other side.

Re: I am at a crossroad

Build yourself a wooden box, put only as much time and money into it such that it suits your purpose. It only has to get the dogs from home to the woods and back again safetly and conveniently. Spend the money on gas and boots.
I have yet to see a dog box catch a varmint, or a truck tree a varmint ...

Re: Two Pack's

There are guys who hunt enough that two packs are better, but it takes a whole lot of hunting for the need to alternatively lay up dogs in order to keep them huntable. There was a time many years ago when we would lay up sets of dogs to keep them from getting totally wore down, but that entailed ...

Re: What the hell is going on in Oregan's schools?

A local water district (lots of water bill payments received) decided to play one of these scenarios out a while back. Being men, the fake bandits took some liberty and added masks and props. It was too much stress for one of the receptionists, who thought it was a real stickup, and she went out on ...

Re: Cutting From The Team

They have to add to the success of the hunt. For pups and young dogs I need to see progress that they will add to the success of the hunt. Once I lose hope that they can fulfill this requirement, I get to not liking them, and I can't feed a dog I don't like.
Lack of brains seems to be the primary ...

Re: Let's look for a pattern

Less than a year ago California was one of the best for the cat hunter. Between the hunting and training seasons - hunt year around except for about a month of "bow season". Some were restricted by "the closure", but others of us were only hindered. Lots and lots of bearutiful country: brushy, rocky ...

Re: Big problem pups fighting to death?

If you whipped a bunch of pups for 10 minutes trying to modify their behavior and they didn't get the point, likley one of two things are going on.
1. It could be the whole batch is a bunch of hard headed, thick skulled idiots and you should spend 1 minute simply culling the entire bunch.
or
2. You ...

Re: Heres my try at the video world

Nice, steady video.
I like the music in the background when it is flipping through the still photos, but music during the video when we should only be enjoying the dogs treed would be better left out.
