Re: July Hounds

I find the July hound comes in just as many looks as thr modern day cur dogs. When I was a kid in the early 50 around middle Mississippi, the July were very similar to walkers but had flag tails and excess hair on back sides of legs and under belly. Most red, yellow brown with white ring neck points ...

Re: July Hounds

As many bear that have been caught with tree hounds,I can’t think of any reason someone would want to do it with a July. I think it can be done, but it don’t make a lot of sense unless there is no potlicker tree dogs around. Bear hunted just a hand full of times and really enjoyed it.from what I saw...

Re: Training bear and cougar hounds! HELP

The silent dogs I’ve owned usually hot treed within 5-10 minutes after they left. They were usually close hunters using the wind to strike. If I were hunting to eat or sell game for money, I would keep a silent dog but I have always hunted for the enjoyment of the race. I personally couldn’t use a s...

Re: Training bear and cougar hounds! HELP

I never found never found drags and artificial training to be much help.ive tried it both ways and training off bait with one pup is the best and quickest way there is. Set up about 6 baited spots, walk the dog in and lean up against a tree and watch never saying anything to the dog. Do that for abo...

Re: Ol' hunter

Law, from what I understand from a good friend that grew up in east Texas, it was just like where I grew up in North middle Mississippi. The accounts of the Big Thicket area is it was settled with people North and East of the Mississippi River that movedout in a hurry for some reason or another. If ...

Re: Ol' hunter

I never rode a horse and wagon to hunt, but I can remember riding one to town shopping with my granddaddy in Grenada county Mississippi. At that time I think in the middle 40s. I believe they flooded Grenada lake in 45-47 so it had to be before that. At that time all towns in that part had wagon yard...

Re: Kinda slow

Back in the day when I first started this, I was having trouble with trash and a old sage told me I needed a check dog and explained what it was for. So I came by one. First time out we started a track and old check dog fell in there and according to Garmin he was out front. I got excited, I’m fixin...

Re: Kinda slow

A lot of pen dogs do catch and kill and they usually banned from pen running.reason being is a coyote cost around $150. The old outside fox hunters I hunted with never cared to catch. They wanted a all night race with a den after daylight.

Re: Kinda slow

Perk, if you were starting from scratch and had no broke dogs and couldn’t find any broke dogs, how would you take a pack young dogs that had never ran anything and made deer proof dogs out of them without ruining the whole bunch?

Re: Kinda slow

I think running a red fox down and catching him is not easy to do with fast dogs.
