Re: Extremely hard toe pad

Re: Raising pups

The pack I’m running now is the dam and her last litter. Dam is a full runningwalker and sire was 1/2 running walker/ 1/2 beagle. Both sire and dam could find track, cold trale, jump and run game solo or with a pack. Both dogs would strike from dog box and have a runnable track.there was 9 pups in t...

Re: Raising pups

If you think about the age you are talking, 2 months translates to 8 weeks. That is 2 weeks older than normal weening . I don’t think I have ever seen a 8 week old puppy really running to catch because of desire to catch. Eight week old puppies will run behind anything that get in front. I never rea...

Re: Alfa collar malfunction

In regard to the Garmin collar, I had a dog out of pocket for 23 days.Received a call from another dog runner telling me he found my dog floating in the canal and took my collars to his house. The collar went dead 26 hrs from the time I turned it on for that hunt. I was looking at the dog traveling ...

Re: Trailing in the desert

Walton, I’ve found it really easy to obedient train a dog. My entire pack will shut down and come to truck horn or bird dog whistle if they are close. I’m able to follow them close enough that when I see something I don’t want them running, I load them up go down the road about 100yds ,put back in f...

Re: Trailing in the desert

Goose, I’m not a dog trainer.i take dogs to the woods and find out which ones want to leave the road, jump and run something. I call that desire to run game and that is the only thing I look for in adog. Dogs learn by doing things over and over. If they will leave the road over and over, find game ov...

Re: Trailing in the desert

Al, when I say swing I’m not talking about one direction. Most animals leave a trail in somewhat of a streight direction whatever they do, feeding running or just traveling. The dogs I’ve noticed that can move game workinside out moving forward. If you think of 12 on the clock, most tracks are going...

Re: Trailing in the desert

Sounds like the sandy scenting conditions compare to the pine needle mats in the southeast. Regardless of what part of the world you are in I believe it’s all about the scenting conditions in the spot you dog is working in at the moment. And I believe those conditions can change pretty fast, like in ...

Re: Alfa collar malfunction

Northrunner, I feel certain the smartest two things I ever did was get my teeth capped and buying Garmin tracking equipment. I can eat hog cracklings and parched peanuts while hunting and and knowing where my dogs are. I use from 6 to 12 collars and use 2 hand held. The only time they are not used 1...

Re: Alfa collar malfunction

I’ve used Garminsince the 220 /dc30 came out and have never had a problem with them not tracking and finding my dog. As far as I know, I’ve never had one malfunction and correct the dog on it’s on. I’ve made mistakes and corrected the wrong dog a lot of times. The only other function I find useful i...

Re: Spring Bear Hunting Question

Mike, you seem like you have been there and done that. I hunted bear a few times between Cardova and Taos, really did enjoy hearing a good bear race but when they left out the race faded pretty quick. I kinda have an idea that a mature bear is tough enough that they could whip off a pretty large and...

Re: Kidney failure

Law, at the start of commercial dog food, the main ingredient was meat/ bone meal and corn. Sometime, I think in the late 50s they found the protein could br raised using soybean meal. This formula lasted for a good while till somebody decided soybean meal bothered the reproductive cycle, and corn ,(...

Re: Kidney failure

Perk, I’ve seen mine drink out of the road ditch, jump in the truck and drink out of the water bucket. Most all mine stick their head in the water bucket every time they load. I believe it’s a habit with mine, don’t know about yours. I’m surprised a hunting dog last over two years. They drink anythi...

Re: Kidney failure

Dogs will drink out of any kind of mud hole or polluted water which goes through the kidney. Talked to a vet about how much urin a dog can drink and he said it unblieveable. I’ve seen them drink their fill out of black/bluestump hole water in August full of what ever. I bet if you had some way to ke...
