Re: Looking for a guy named Claunchy

Wish I could help you Mark. It has been a long time since I ran into him. The last time I saw him he was hangin out with you, Al and a few other famous coastal cat hunters at the OUSDA Convention. I dug up a pic, Claunchy is the one with the cool shades. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f345/MICKEY...

Re: Opinions

I have bought more dogs then I have sold. Every time I sell a dog I get very nervous that the dog will make the buyer happy. I try not to trump up the stories and try not to price the dog to high. I have absolutely no problem selling a dog on a trial, but I don't think I have ever bought a dog with ...

Dogs adapting to a new environment

JC's recent topic reminded me of a dog I bought about ten years ago. It was tried by several hunters and most of them said the dog was worthless. I had hunted with the dog many times and when I got wind it was for sale I bought it up over the phone. That worthless dog caught me hundreds of cats. He ...

Re: Washington Hound Hunters

I sent some emails concerning the night hunting rules, I recieved this back. Dear Mr. Streepy, Thank you for contacting the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The Director’s Office has requested that we respond to your inquiry. Technically, under the rule-making process, the original propos...

Re: Ego, humble modest

I am not sure what Deweys intentions were with this post. I would be willing to leave it alone even though Oneguy828 got pretty brutal. I think everyone is a little quick to call Deweys posts an attempt to boost his own ego, even though some of his "pot stirring" is to promote thought. I t...

Re: Split Bobcat Race ends with a Stolen Tom

I have had my dogs get in with other hunters and had others get in with mine on many occasions. Most guys don't do it on purpose. About ten years ago I had a cat get shot out of a tree and it was completely obvious the guys dumped in on my dogs. Those guys have a reputation for not only stealing cat...

Re: Pup trainers

When you talk with the old timers around here a pup trainer is a lion. The bobcat hunters used lions to get pups going, hence the term "pup trainer".

It wasn't until I started reading on this forum that I saw the term meant older seasoned dog.

Re: When to seperate a pup from the pack ?

So I have a question for George. How does turning older experienced dogs off on a strike each time help teach the up and coming dogs to start the track in the right direction when it's their time? It doesn't, but neither does putting a dog down in the snow and telling them what way to go. I don't h...

Re: When to seperate a pup from the pack ?

Unreal_tk, I have turned out pups before the other dogs, most of the time I ended up with the feeling that I hadn't accomplished much. I try to keep an open mind. In order to take some of the practices people talk about and make them work until you see the results, can be a very long term game. So m...

Re: When to seperate a pup from the pack ?

Unreal_tk, It would take a better houndsmen than me, even with a Garmin, to know if they took a red hot strike backwards. Some guys say they can tell with their experienced dogs and so can I to an extent. Pups/young dogs are always changing the way they act and sound so it would be hard for me to te...

Re: Longest bobcat race?

If you take out all the bad spots cats like to frequent they are very easy to catch. Add in a half mile of blow downs in a nasty creek canyon and it gets tough for any dog to hold pressure, usually giving the cat another head start. The hardest races I have ever had were in the spring following a lo...

Re: When to seperate a pup from the pack ?

Unreal_tk, If you are referring to seeing a cat cross the road then that might be a time to let pups go. I have done that. That doesn't happen very often, and when you do see a cat walk across the road it isn't unusual for the best dogs to have a hard time getting it started. Once they get it starte...

Re: When to seperate a pup from the pack ?

There have been some interesting topics lately that have had me thinking. I get what everyone is saying about turning out pups first to let them spread their wings a little. When hunting in snow I have let pups try tracks before, but where you hunt and the type of hunting will have a big effect on w...

If there is something going on that the members of this forum would like to discuss it could be brought up in the right place. Distracting from posts with childish comments isn't really productive. If I have said something that you feel was disrespectful please let me know. A new topic could be star...
