Re: How much heat?
I agree with Nathan it really does depend a lot on the dog. As a bird hunter as well as a hound guy I have to evaluate each dog before I subject them to series hunting in very warm conditions. Jon Kibler who wrote the book Lion Tales certainly had some good insights. Many times when we are hunting a...

Re: Supplements
Go to WILDERNESS ATHLETE'S site online and check out their K9 products. they are outstanding and better yet this company is run a hound guy who chases bears and lions.
Their products for humans are also great!
Keep em hydrated, if you ever see a dog die from heat stroke, it's not a pretty sight!

Re: Ol' hunter
coontail, I can tell you about one fella like that that i broke out hunting with close to 50 years ago. This old boy named Leo was pretty old when i first met him but he was still running dogs for coon and cat. He had been a rancher all of his early life and after he left the ranch he made most of hi...

Re: Fox Hunting... good predator call/ tips?
Although I have been calling predators for nearly 50 years I do not consider myself an expert. I am a hand caller and don't use mechanical calls however I have hunted successfully with them with others, I just like that challenge of a good hand call. That being said on this forum we are lucky to hav...

Re: Ruger single 7
Having seen many lions taken with the 357 magnum from many angles I think I would have to answer, maybe. It pretty much depends on the weight and style of bullet you are using the the velocity at which it impacts the target. I would say most likely a 158 gr. soft nose or hard-cast bullet would penet...

Re: Saw length
We like the Fanno #24 it has a 22.5 " curved blade and is self cleaning. You can get them from Outfitters Supply in Colombia Falls, Montana. I would spend the extra money and get the good leather scabbard for it rather than the synthetic one. I guess the synthetic works ok, but good leather han...

Re: Ruger single 7
I think it would be a great little lion gun, and a carbine in it would be excellent! This 327 Fed. really performs, and I can tell you from long experience with the 32 H&R Magnum with the 85 gr. XTP bullet it will get the job done. This round in factory form is much more potent than the 32 H&...

Re: Trailing in the desert
Al,
You gotta love that little tight mouthed female!
I have seen this too, and a few times I have seen a cat just set down among some working hounds and just watch them. They just working with their noses down and go right past him almost running into him. go figure that?????

Re: Trailing in the desert
I agree with Brett, at times them buggers are right there sneaking around you and for the life of it you can't get their track up and going. Sand and that low humidity is certainly a factor as well because the UV rays will just burn that scent out so quickly. but here is the dang deal: that stinking...

Re: Spring Bear Hunting Question
We don't have a spring bear season anymore in New Mexico but when we did it could make for a long days. If you can get on a spring bear in the rough rocky country very soon after he comes out of the den, his pads are still soft and he will get sore footed and stop or climb pretty quick. But let him ...

Re: German short hair for fox?
Shorthairs are amazing and their parent breed Deutsche Kurzors from the old country are still used on fur as much as feathers. I try to keep my GSP female straight on birds but I do run her with my hounds for conditioning when on horseback and she has got my best lion strike dog opening on blue quai...

Re: anyone in eastern mt or western nd
anywhere along Beaver Creek that you can get permission is good. Also south of Beach towards Golva and Ollie netted me a lot of fur back in the day. Stock ponds and slough areas will all have coons moving thru them. The rut is over now and sows will be feeding in a much more limited area closer to g...

Re: A Legend Passes
RIP Del! I first met Del in 1970 when he was living in Victor he had the big blue dogs back then. He left a lot of tracks from those big old boots in those mountains. He was a woodsman and hound man from the ground up, and he also did a lot for the Bluetick breed establishing a very fine line of big...

Re: where to start in the mule game
Nathan,
That is an excellent point! I have seen some mules and donkeys that were cryptic and sneaky dog killers. no messing around absolutely lethal! They waited till the appropriate time and out of the blue BOOM! Dead dog!
