Re: Getting started on coon hunting
Starting a hound by itself can be done, in fact, if you want a hound that can can catch there own coon. I started at age 38 with one hound pup. I started him just like wick talks about in the book. The first official hunt he went on he was 10 mo old. At that age he would get out and hunt. He would s...

More Den Trees?
Where I live its been a record Oct. For heat and we haven't had any significant rain in months it seems. During this time frame I have noticed more tracks ending at den trees. I would think the dogs would have to be right behind a coon to smell it in these conditions but its been the opposite it see...

Re: Moose hounds
Sounds like you've got moose hounds! Great story and please, by all means keep us all informed on your quest for that cow/calf with your dogs. Sounds like ablast. Pictures would be icing on the cake!

I guess when you got more poles than trees you can get rid of the tree slickers faster!

Badass! I got to watch my dogs put one up a fence post in the middle of a big irrigation ditch once. I like the tree style of your dogs.

Re: Big game bred hounds vs coon hound bred?
I recently got into hunting hounds so I am not an expert by any means. I have been to a few competition hunts with my dog and do see some big differences what I would think most big game hunters want compared to a consistent winner. The dogs that I saw win would straight run in a straight line basic...

Re: Mental struggles
This is a great thread and with all the experienced houndsman responding I feel like I should probably leave it.....But I started hunting one hound about 2 years ago. I raised him from a pup and we hunted alone for the first year and a half as I didn't know anyone who hunted around here. I basically...

Re: Obedence
David I've thought about all those things you talked about. Like Kevin was saying about his dogs, he hasn't been real trashy. I started him on coon and he had early exposure to coon naturally (without a cage). That's not to say that he hasn't treed turkeys, ran deer and coyotes because he's done all...

Re: Obedence
The way I hunt usually is lead him out to a spot, turn him loose and he'll start hunting. He Wil hunt out right away meaning he doesn't take off running and babbling at all. He'll generally run a 4 to 500 yard loop so to speak and hunt that whole loop inside. If he doesn't strike he'll check in and ...

I meant to say he got in a fight with a coon under my porch a couple times!
