i use the trx 1000 blue box and a tracker maxima 5000 and get the same range out of both in the mountains here, however the yagi hooked up on the maxima makes it easier and faster to get a direction on the dogs than the small antenna on the maxima and the blue box is a pain to carry in the woods but...

you said it perfect. i trail with 2-4 depending on the track and turn a couple young one in on a hot track and seldom have anything want to run trash less problems altogether
