Re: Ladner BMC

I have hunted Ladner BMC's for 22 years now. I have always used mine for squirrel and coon. But I have sold a few pups to a guy in Wisconsin that uses them on Bears. He waits till the bear is jumped and then sends in the curs to put him up. He calls them the heat seeking missiles. They put the bear ...

Re: Easiest Hound Breed to Train

Haha. Trick question hey.

If you want easy then your not ready to be a houndmen.

Don't matter what breed you train it's all patience, understanding and dedication. You have to eat, breath and live hunting to have good dogs consistently.

Re: Do dogs have a terrible 2 stage?

For sure they do. Seen it in enough pups no matter what the breed. I've seen it in my BMC"s but in their case it usually runs anywhere from 7 months old to 3 years. Depending on the dog.

Re: cur dogs on Bear

[quote="depends on the dog. if you expect a sighthound to run a track you're going to fail at catching game with them. likewise if you expect a cur or terrier to run the same track as your cold nosed cathounds you're going to fail at catching game with them. whether or not you catch more game is also dependant. there are guys w/ stags that catch more coyotes than the guys running foxhounds in the same area and they quite literally HAVE to show them the game. likewise running open mouth hounds in TX for hogs will net you empty freezers & shot dogs more often than not. so yeah if a dogger doesn't know the game & the area well enough to put the dog on a track it can work then they are going to be disappointed in their performance. likewise if a person buys curs that are nothing but 10 generations of squirrell dogs and expects them to bring the heat to push a bear up a tree or stop a hog, they are going to be disappointed.
right now i got a dane that will work on sight like my greyhound and works the wind like a pointer. she has a ton of want to and gives an honest effort every time. so far she has only taken coon & coyote and nearly yanked my arm out trying to run the neighborhood cats. w/ a little work & some time she may even wind up running a hot track. my problem is that i'm new to the dry west and finding a cat track warm enough for her will be difficult until I learn more about the game and how it lives in the area.[/quote]

I like the way you think!

Re: cur dogs on Bear

I'd would venture to say that there aren't alot of all cur packs for bear out there. Depending on what type of cur your talking about. Your purebred Blackmouth Curs and Mountain curs and not going to start a 12 hour old bear. Hell they won't even start an hour old bear. It's either a hot track that ...

I sold a couple Blackmouth cur pups to a guy in Wisconsin that used them for bear. When the hounds jumped the bear they would send in the curs, as he called them the heat seeking missiles, to put it up a tree. He loved his for bear.

Re: Today's Adventure

:D Good story.

My Blackmouth curs will flush and tree grouse. I use them for squirrel and coon and they don't get to far out so I consider a grouse a bonus. Nothing like an all around meat dog!!
