Re: Northeastern Coyote Behavior
I don't know about Northeastern coyotes but we have larger ones here in the mountains of montana, I suspect they are similar. Locating them is not too much of a problem, most anywhere you go, they will be there! You can call them ----once. Most of the time they circle downwind to approach. You can t...

Re: Montana HB 468 Black Bear with hounds
They haven't finalized or published anything yet, but the proposal is to allow hounds during the Spring Black Bear Season with areas that are deemed "high risk" of Grizzly encounters off limits to hounds. They had been holding hearings and accepting comments before finalizing the regulatio...

Re: Why a x breed
Since this is posted in the "Coyote Hunting" section, I can see how a "head in the air" style dog with a good nose would be desired! Speed, endurance, teamwork and smarts are essential or you will have tore up dogs! The only problem would be the lack of consistency when not breed...

Re: First tree dogs. Advice?
My advice is: DON’T let others opinions about how good your dogs are matter! There’s a quote I’ve heard attributed to just about every good hound man known: There’s nothing in this world that can swell you up with pride one minute then totally p_ss you off the next like a hound! Just roll with it an...

Re: Let’s talk.
I keep hounds mainly to be general ranch dogs to chase coyotes , bears and cats away from my farmstead and calving grounds. In the past, I always had a "good old hound" to show the puppy the ropes when we got a new pup. We do take them out some to hunt coon and whatever else shows up, but ...

Re: Help choosing/finding my first hunting dog
My hounds are very clean and well behaved inside as long as they get the couch! Lol They seem to regard me as the leader of the pack and keep track of me and follow my lead for the days activities. They tend to hunt a bit too close for running lions, since they check in repeatedly, but they did put ...

Re: Help choosing/finding my first hunting dog
You need at least two dogs for coyotes that will work in tandem and watch each other's backs. I have had Black and Tans, a Plot, mixed breeds and currently have a very promising Blue Tick that have all been "trashy enough" to run about anything. They have been "ranch hounds" that...

Re: Lion Killing Ranchers!!!!
I'm a rancher. The old saying that Farmers buy everything retail and sell wholesale is still true. Livestock are a commodity that we have very little say in the price received. Over time the market tends to osculate right at break even levels. When prices are above break even, everyone makes a littl...

Re: Why do farmers seem to like foxhounds?
I'm a rancher and I keep a couple hounds. Perhaps it is because all of the ones that I have had were big game bred, but I have found hounds to be much more versatile than most people believe. They don't harass my cattle and the cows seem to understand that. I've seen hounds chase a coon through a gr...

Re: TWC Training
If it's a young puppy, a fun game to get it started trailing and treeing is to tie a weenie on a fishing line, use it to make a drag trail then tie it up just out of reach in a tree or on the yard fence. I would go out a separate door from where I let the pup out, cast the weenie close to that entra...

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog
The most hard treeing dog I ever had was a Australian Shepherd/ Heeler/ Lab mutt! She would work cows for me, fetch ball with the kids or hunt coons or bobcat at night. She'd put her nose on the ground and track and had to be physically pulled off of the tree. BTW, that Black and Tan/ Matthess pup I...

Re: Pack of all females.
We have two females that often run with two others. We hadn't spayed ours but when one had a false pregnancy, she started an alpha -female routine over food and space that resulted in a lot of fighting and drama among all the dogs. Now they are all spayed!

Re: Dogs Caught in Snares
Years ago, I was setting out snares for coyotes and caught a neighbors blue tick a couple of times. He never pulled the snare tight enough to choke down and loved the 4 mile ride back to his house. My snares were mostly in holes in fence lines and I often placed lure in a tree just beyond. The hound...

Re: Montana Lion Season Conflict
The start of the big game general season varies from year to year but they try to give hunters the same number of days afield. Our lion and bobcat chase season has traditionally started on Dec 1. It appears to me that the FWP finally gave us just a little bit of respect. Most of the deer /elk hunter...

Re: Blue Heelers
Our cowdogs (mostly Heeler X's) run with the hounds. Heelers display a lot of terrier characteristics. They are enthusiastic hunters and often locate the coon in the tree before the hounds do and the little mutts tree hard! They don't trail like a hound does but they can contribute to the pack in th...
