Re: Split Race

Not to mention the time that takes away from me being able to find a second track. It’s much easier to get cats on multiple tracks a day with the GPS. You just have to know how to use it and be honest with data it’s sending you. And your probably right that I wouldn’t be able to understand a lot of ...

Re: Split Race

If a dog is behind on the GPS and barking. I have more than enough time to comprehend what’s happening. And to be honest with however much correction will probably never be a dog I want. I am glad I started hunting on foot. But I would never go back to that, for many reasons but mainly I want them t...

Re: Split Race

Seen a person walking into a lose slow a race down quite a bit too. Your presence will pull them back to you. Have even seen a dog false tree in those situations. Don’t think it would’ve happened if dummy A and dummy B “Me” didn’t stand around looking for a track out. Being able to comprehend what’s...

Re: Split Race

Sometimes there is an addition by subtraction. Taking a dog out of the mix can really help define things. But I would strongly advise you not to trust your dogs but to always question and overanalyze them. Dogs can’t lie but they can do a damn good job of makin a liar out of us! If you trust them an...

Re: Bear leading dogs to porky pine

Are these bears baying or just runnin? I would suspect you have a dog or two that like porkys but when they got a bear caught and it sounds good they show back up. My two cents, but I don’t ever give the dog the benefit of the doubt.

Re: Question for experienced bobcat hunters

You think they locate the cat in the tree itself? Or the end of the track? Both?

Re: Question for experienced bobcat hunters

Mule man, I have seen one dog wrecking crews too. That’s all fine and dandy as long as you KNOW that one dog will turn out. Fact of the matter is when you start a pup there is no way of knowing whether or not he is going to be worth anything... so wasting a year and a half trying to start one dog by...

Re: Question for experienced bobcat hunters

And to directly answer your question I think the longer you have hunted the easier to identify the type of dogs you like and want to hunt becomes easier. I have held on to a dog that was a great track dog but didn’t tree till 2 1/2-3 would I do it again? probably not but I’m glad I have her now! I t...

Re: Question for experienced bobcat hunters

I agree with mostly everything said, great information. Merlo, I think you know that a more game rich environment with a good handler lends to a lot of positive experiences and can help over come some physical/genetic limitations. Something that hasn’t been mentioned that I have experienced though i...

Re: Running dogs locating

Didn't you just have tree dogs when you hunted back there merlo? You would say you haven't improved your catch % with more experience and other dogs??

Re: What is the difference between hunting bob cat lynx and or mountain loin

I think something to take into consideration in cold trailing is type of habitat. I believe cats in eastern Oregon have a larger range than those in western Oregon(less brush-less game) That logic leads me to believe cold trailing makes up a bigger portion of the race. I haven't hunted everywhere bu...

Re: Good ways too train a pup

The walk with wick books are absolutely worth every penny too. If for nothing else but to stimulate your mind and begin a thought process of training dogs.

Re: Good ways too train a pup

To go along with peg leg I would add making it feel comfortable in the environment it will hunt in. (Long walks in the woods) will help the pup feel more comfortable when it comes time to fire. I see a lot of people never leave home with a dog except to hunt and I think this cripples a lot of young ...
