Re: Southern Cat Hunting
Still alive not doing any hunting, maybe a few times this winter with friend. Balance issues have slowed me down to a crawl of my old self. Wish all the best health and happy hunting. Al

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Yes blessed indeed, was only a ten minute drive home once I got back to my rig. Even more blessed to have a wife that tolerated my addiction, never hunted with me, usually gave me a lecture once a season about being so wrapped up in hunting, but if I lost a dog she would help me search for it ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
I am guessing this hunt was around thirty years ago, Early am I cast skinner, spike & couple young dogs and had roaded them a short distances when they found an old scent and soon opened. Was not long before they crossed the ridge and out of hearing into Roland Creek Drainage. Able to drive to the ...

Re: Southern Cat Hunting
Sass reread my post and need to restate, was not suggesting anyone get all tree dogs. I have hunted enough to know there are dogs that can locate some cats, then there are real locators and over time know lots cats are not located, without a true locator in the pack. Long ago, Read and enjoyed Mr ...

Re: Southern Cat Hunting
One has to hunt tree dogs to know how many bobcat are treeing in different parts of the country, in my opinion. Watched the podcast Brett Vaugh did with Hooti Shaw, enjoyed it very much, did notice stated very few cats in that area freed. Then is nephew stated about half the bobcats he ran treed ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
I do not believe a dog being cold nosed has any thing to do with track speed once the critter is jumped. That has just been my experience.

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Sheba, that is a good question. Have seen good dogs in several different breeds, never saw a perfect one. I like dogs that are open mouth, however dogs that are tight mouthed will sure make catching some bobcats easier. If a dog has a good nose, moves a cold scent, runs to catch when jumped, locates ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
He is a very good hunter and has a big heart. Those young dogs were in no danger of being shot. My thoughts were they had treed a bobcat, as we had never started a cougar at that crossing.

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
A friend & I had spent about six hours roading & boxing the hounds, had gotten a few smells but hounds were unable to work those into a jump. Decided to check one last high point crossing before calling it a day. Had roaded the dogs up a very steep mile long dirt road to the crossing where the ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
This hunt took place in the mid eighties, traveled about 12 mile out to an area where knew there was a hard running bobcat that had eluded my dogs a few times more than like to admit. Dog hunt that day was a female named tiny who ran a bobcat about as good as anything I had ever hunted, her ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
After thinking on those other two dogs Dave had on that hunt one was a mostly white walker looking female named queen, queen was very coon footed but a very hard tree dog. The other was a male named hammer, hammer was a litter mate to tiny and split. Their damn was Dave/s pride & joy a female named ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Lawdawg think for sure motion sickness. Here is another hunt I recall, thinking around 1982, uncle came out from Indiana to visit my folks. Oak Raleigh was in his mid to late seventies, had coon & rabbit with dogs most of his life, had never hunted bobcat, bear or cougar and was excited when I told ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Remember this hunt because it was the turning point for the young female named red. Had been a few months since Robin gave her to me, she was showing up at some trees, but not really engaged with the pack. Then on this morning the dogs got after a bobcat, that I had ran a few times before without ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Lawdogs we are much slower than use to be, but, we stay at it. Good to hear you are enjoying your hog dogs. Pusher was a nice dog that whole litter was good, can/t take credit for the cross Rene was the one who ask me about making the cross. JC Padgett had a male used on bear & cat that was real ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.
Here/s a good hunt I recall taken with pusher & red. I had driven about an hour over to an area called twelve mile, pusher struck from the box and must have gone about a good hundred yards before he opened. He and red spent considerable amount of time working that old track with very little barking ...
