Re: how to start 3 young blueticks correctly?
When I first started hound hunting I got two pups. Everyone told me I was stupid and it would never work, but I had a plan. In Idaho you can bait, so I went and set two baits and when they started getting hit I went to sit them and took the pups along. We'd get there in the early morning grey and ...

Re: bear bait ????
Trail mix, granola, and peanut butter are all good. I like cookies, doughnuts, and potato chips as well. Most baiters and houndsmen I know use lots of used fryer grease as well. Vanilla and liquid smoke work well as attractants, however the liquid smoke will hang around longer and attract bears for ...

Re: Does anybody have any info or tips on becoming a Guide,
I don't know how outfitting in Montana works, but to get an outfitting license in Idaho will cost you. You have to buy another outfitter out of their unit, and you are required to be an Idaho resident to do it. You can get licensed as a guide in Idaho if an outfitter will employ you, but even then ...

Idaho Right to Hunt, Fish, and Trap
There is currently a bill in the Idaho Legislature that seeks to protect our right to hunt, fish, and trap. It is termed HJR002A by the legislature. I just finished reading the bill, and the intent is great, but I don't feel the language is specific enough. It says that the "traditional methods ...

Re: do you guys think that we have the best hounds and curs
Heres my thoughts-for what their worth. When I was a kid my father had hog and coon dogs in northwest Florida. He ran mostly plotts with a bluetick or walker now and then. If he got a dog that wouldn't hunt at 18 months-he shot it. He didn't sell it or neuter it or try to fix the problem, he got rid ...

Re: Grawes lure vs bear hide
I've had the same experience. I don't even want to try to think about why, because I have no idea about what it requires to make bottled scents. My pups will trail it, but after they've been on a few bears they seem to lose interest in the bottled stuff. You are right about the mt. lion and bobcat ...

Re: Roading dogs to start a lion track.
Most of the lions I catch in some parts of southwest Idaho are started by roading. I use a four-wheeler rather than a truck. This area recieves little snow and if it does get snow it generally melts is short order making dry ground tactics the best way to hunt. I just put the dogs down and go for a ...

Re: What would you shoot?
I have taken several black bears and two mountain lions with this load. I forget the specifics of the recipe- it's been about four years since I loaded them. The mountain lions dropped out of the tree within 30-40 seconds. The bears have all taken the first shot and bled out in short order within a ...

Re: What would you shoot?
That would be the perfect recipe for someone looking to full body mount a lion or black bear. With a lung or heart shot out of a tree it would dispatch quickly and leave little patchwork for the taxidermist to deal with. I have a S&W 686 .357 that I load a 180 gr. cast bullet for that my taxidermist ...

Re: Do dogs have a terrible 2 stage?
I never believed in the terrible 2 stage until about 8 years ago. I bought a plott pup from good bloodlines and by 8 months she was running bears with my old dogs. She started tracks well, drove the tracks hard, had a good dose of grit that i liked on nasty bay-ups, and treed hard. then about 2 ...

Re: Which Blue Line For My Needs?
I would rarely tell anyone to shy away from Camerons, but if you're looking for medium-nosed dogs you might want to look for some Hammer or Jet blood. Camerons are usually very cold-nosed. I have a male Hammer/Utchman cross that is more medium nose. These two lines have the same characteristics of ...

Re: best food for a pregnant female
I feed Iams puppy food as well- one part puppy food to two parts regular dog food. I also add one cup cooked beef and an egg once daily. Egg whites have the purest source of albumin known to man and help the mother and the pups considerably.

Re: Anyone else have a crappy winter?
You don't need fresh snow to catch a lion, you just need a fresh lion. HAHA. This is when the good, straight dogs shine and the rest cry. Lions don't wait for snow to move around, and you shouldn't wait for snow to hunt.

Re: What Makes a Lead Dog?
I've always subscribed to Del Cameron's philosophy when it comes to "lead dogs". By around 16-18 months an often-hunted dog should be catching its own game alone quite regularly. If any given dog cannot do this they should be culled. I guess if you believe in this theory then you will eventually ...

Ever seen a holstein cow? Looks like the bovine version of a walker hound.
