Consider trying Houndsmen's Cream on the pads to condition them and resist cracking. DU carries it.

You could try checking the Traditional Hunting Airedale forum. A number of folks there use Airedales on big game. I use my Airedale on birds and small game. What part of PA are you from? I'm in the northeast corner.
