Re: Pure or cross bred

I would like a hunt with a terrier/stock dog crossed with a good Leopard Hound. I think the Airedale/Leopard Hound cross would be hard to beat on about any type of game. Sorry I can’t help with your specific question.

Re: Anyone Alive in here?

I got a Leopard Hound pup last winter that is a little over a year and showing some progress. He doesn’t seem as good as hunter as my past Leopard, but I think he will turn out fine. He wants to hunt, but hasn’t been exposed to a lot of game yet. Plan to start walking out cat tracks with him and/or ...

Re: first post

We used to chase bobcats in NE OK and got two when I was younger. There is a good cat population, I think a snow would really help to sort out tracks, bc with the number of coons it would be hard not to tree coons. I also think running in the daylight outside of deer season would be effective. I spe...

Re: Long time lurker - new poster

Like yourself I started out coon hunting and running the occasional bobcat in OK. I started hunting in Montana 9 years ago, and had a handful of great hunts with treed game, but lots of long walks or miles driven with not much results. I agree about avoiding a young dog killed or maimed but in north...

Re: Looking for paradise

Yes, it was two pipelines. One in 2015 by Ft. Gay and 2018 by Ridley. I seen quite a few bobcats out there and they treed a lot of coons. The coons seemed to go to rocky dens a lot.

Re: Looking for paradise

NVlion - I’ve crossed some big lion tracks down by Silver King when I worked on the NV Online. Ely is a great hunting town. I lived up a summit in the campground (tent) at Hwy 6 while working over there from 2011-2013. I miss Nevada sometimes. Good luck, Preston

Re: Looking for paradise

We moved to western Montana 7 years ago, and I’m mostly a coon hunter from eastern Oklahoma, so this was a different experience. Maybe I’m over-cautious, but since 2017 (very hard winter) the wolves moved into the main area where I hunted and had my one dog chase bobcats. It’s gotten to the point th...

Re: anyone in eastern mt or western nd

I have been hunting over in eastern Montana during the late winter and spring months for the past couple years. There is lots of coons, and some big ones. They seem to run into holes, haystacks, culverts, or the dogs will ground catch them. I do not hunt froze over waterbodies or large open water, b...

Re: A love for hunting, but first time coonhound "Dad"

Armyhunter1 - That is a great looking pup, she should make a great hound. I started out like you are 3 years ago and have trained two hounds from scratch, they still need lots work and more hunting time. We ran and treed our first lion last weekend twice, so it was a major confidence booster. I had ...

Re: Getting started on coon hunting

Hey coonslayer quit being a knucklehead. K Canterbury, don't worry about what other hounds men say, there are lots of na-Sayers and some good guys that generally want to help others. It took me a couple years of hunting before my dogs started treeing fairly regularly. Feeders work great, and I think...

Re: anyone in eastern mt or western nd

Does North Dakota require a hunting license to coon hunting there? I will be working periodically from north of Sidney, Mt to Eklaka, Mt and I'm planning to bring one dog with me. I mainly planning on staying in eastern Montana but was interested to know if there was more public land in ND. Thanks

Re: What's your shooting iron ?

I carry a Henry 22 mag level action. It doesn't get used much due to limited amounts of treed game. Hopeful, that will change this year. :D

Re: The Misfit Cat Hunting Thread

Duck Goose, I started hunting hounds again three years ago after a long break as a kid hunting coons and bobcats in Oklahoma. I would definitely recommend reading David's book bobcat dogs, a very good book. Secondly keep hunting one dog at a time until they improve, or don't work out. I have one wal...

Re: Running lions with one dog????

Justahunter, I assume you mean leading your dogs on a fresh lion/bobcat track until you jump it? I have been very successful in tracking elk in the rifle seasons, and normally if it's a fresh track (>8 hours) you can at least see it, jump it, or get a shot in 3-6 hours later. It may take walking 3-5...
