Do you think i could train my black lab to hunt coon. he's real good on pheasents!
The biggest question is would he bark up a tree just because he could smell coon scent on the side of the tree. This is one thing that a good coondog has that not every dog with desire to hunt and a good nose will ...

Re: What do you look for in a hog dog?
Thanks for the replies. i wasn't sure what it took never been around a hog hunt, but would love to go someday. I have a Plott male that is almost 2 yrs old. He's been started on coon. He is a heads-up, hard pushing track dog that runs a track faster than any other dog he's hunted with (and he's ...

What do you look for in a hog dog?
We don't have hogs around here yet, but according to some reports, they are coming this way. So my question is, what do you look for in a young dog to determine if it's got any potential as a possible hog dog?

Re: how do you know?
The best thing to do is put a shock collar on him and go deer hunting. Spot some deer in the open, pull over, unload the dog and see if he wants to run them. If he does stop him with the collar. It should not take more than a few times.
Yep, this works good for me too.

Re: What is the biggest coon you have treed?
Broke my record this year, a couple weeks ago with one that weighed 30.6 lbs. That was in Southern IL. Killed several over 25 lbs this year. But if I ever saw one of those 40-50 lb coons I would think my dogs had treed a bear!!

Re: Coyotes AARRRGGHH
Went out Mon night and the dogs cut a track then a pack of yotes started up. The garmin said my dogs were about 200 yds away and the coyotes sounded closer than that, between me and the dogs. I used to have a big male Plott that would fight coyotes when they cam in on them, but my dogs now are a ...

Old to hunting, but new to site
I've been coon hunting for a while now, but never got into big game. However my coondogs have run a couple bobcats through the years and I think it's only a matter of time until they make it legal to take them either by trapping and or hunting here in IL. Also got hogs coming this way. Sooo....to ...
