Re: cold trail or jump?

Some dogs are content to smell cat tracks, some dogs aren't content until they are smelling cat ass. When you get one of the latter that use their mouth right they will catch a lot of those sneakers. Exactly, Mark!!! That does a pretty good job of explaining what I was going to post. I was going to...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Anybody with the name Willie ought to be an authority on having an "empty sack", better listen to him Jcat. Hahaha, the funny part is that the person I was quoting was Elmer Blankenship. Your class speaks for itself, Willie. Maybe someday I'll be up to your standards. If that day co...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Its seems to me as though the biggest factor here is each persons definition of a jumped cat. Aside from that, personal goals and preferences come into play. For me, its less about the number of cats on a stretcher and more about the dog work. I know there are benefits to a silent or quiet trailing ...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Well that definition would definitely sway my percentages. What if a cat does just as the bear did in the video I posted and is running long before the dogs get to it? Do you guys still consider that to be trailing? If that animal heads for rougher country/worse conditions and gets away, does it cou...

Re: cold trail or jump?

To add to that, if a cat is not considered jumped until the dogs have caught up to it and are in a foot race with it, I can understand the very high percentages because most of the work is done at that point. Under that premise, which also brings us back to the original question, a fast hot nosed do...

Re: cold trail or jump?

No Jcathunter I don't catch 100% jumped tracks but if I was only catching a few I would go with different dogs. People make cat hunting harder cause they just do they have beliefs that might not be accurate or opinions that aren't accurate. What do you consider as, "only a few" and, at wh...

Re: Alpha map card not working

Good to hear. For some reason, I had to update mine a few times, as well. It would say it updated but, when I would look at the unit, it still had the old version. Eventually, after some bad words, pulled out hair, and a stiff drink, it worked. :D

Re: cold trail or jump?

Mark, I did end up with a couple of those dogs, and, like you said, they caught cats and I did like them a lot but, then, I was fortunate enough to hunt with Elmer and see his caliber of dogs.(the dogs were old when I got them so I cannot comment as to what they did in their prime) Back then, I was ...

Re: cold trail or jump?

I know its not a cat but here is an example of what I consider to be jumped. In this video, the bear is clearly up and moving but the dogs are still way behind. To me, once the animal knows he's being chased and is responding to it, he's jumped. You can even hear me say, "they're gonna have to ...

Re: cold trail or jump?

So you guys only say the cat is jumped if the dogs are hot on it??? For me, the cat is jumped as soon as the dogs get to where the cat was laid up and they have him up and moving. If the cat is way out in front of them or the dogs are "following the cat around", I call that being in the pr...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Dewey, its funny you say that about the upbringing. I don't know how many times I've heard the same story. Someone has issues with one of your dogs and you claim upbringing. Of course, a master handler can turn them right around and, of course, then they are worth more money. Like I said...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Well, someday, maybe I'll get to see a good dog work. :D I'm going to be over in your neck of the woods in January to hunt with a buddy of mine and I may take you up on your offer. I know he's going to as you've offered the same to him. From what you are saying, it really makes me wonder how my two ...

Re: cold trail or jump?

Sounds like the definition of "jumped race" is being manipulated. Pretty soon a "jumped race" will mean 1 jump ahead of the dogs and cold trailing will mean everything else. If this is the case, then I guess the questions of importance becomes how high a percentage of cold track...

Re: Alpha map card not working

Have you updated both units? I just bought Garmins new map for Idaho and it wouldn't work correctly until I updated my Alpha.
