Re: Has it always been this hard?

...The old dog taught Clyde a thing or two (but not much) before he died last year, along with some others old dogs which left us a 7 year old Matthes hound that had some experience but had never made it to a tree... I am sure I don’t fully understand your situation. You also mentioned you could no...

Re: Has it always been this hard?

You ask some good questions. Don’t breed the Matthes dog unless it is a good dog. Don’t breed any dog unless it is a good dog. There are dozens of puppies for sale that came from powerful sire and dam both. You are working your way in genetically backwards. Stop, turn around and go in frontwards. It...

Re: The worst hunting jam you've been in

This is an interesting thread to me. Especially when some of the stories are from people I have known a long time. You just never know what a person might have lived through unless they tell you, and some don’t like to talk about it. Some one with one of these stories sent it to me, but I wish he wo...

Re: The worst hunting jam you've been in

Hypothermia is a killer. Doesn’t matter if it’s Texas or Alaska I have been through the ice and unable to get back out until one last try, and I still don’t know how I did it. It is a very helpless feeling. It was very cold and the ice was good over the swamps, but I went through where there was bea...

Re: The worst hunting jam you've been in

Great stories! I enjoyed reading them. I don’t hunt dangerous game except lion occasionally. So my biggest jams always include water and/ or ice/ frozen bog, etc. Those can be life and death situations for sure, but would be boring compared to your stories. Some one recently told me you have to be a...

Re: Help Identifying - Treeing (or Running?) WC?

It’s great you found a good dog. I have never known a Treeing Walker that naturally does not bark. I have never known a pure bred Treeing Walker that made a good house pet. I have heard of it, but would have to see it to beleive it. Many walkers that have been trained to lead would drag you down the...

Re: Starting a Cur vs Hound

I'm new to this forum but not dogs. I've been hunting my own dogs for right at 30 years. To me, slow starting or fast starting is a matter of preference of the individual feeding the dog. I prefer faster starters. I have a family of dogs I've been raising and hunting for a while. In order to move f...

Re: Some beginner questions from a hunter looking to get into hounds

Hi guys, 1) I have a "pet" dog already (pitbull) we got at the humane society. Is there any harm letting him co-habitate with a finished hound and or maybe even let them run together? I ordered some "grawes" cat scent to start practicing with him- yes I know this is probably a wa...

Re: Anyone in Oregon

I don’t have any experience with that breed, but for some strains of dog five months is too young to expect a lot from the dog. I would be worried if it was a walker. But I think the catahoulas are bred to be more like a working dog that interacts a lot with its handler. I don’t know anyone who uses...

Who thinks up these things?
I mean that required a lot of thought, rumination and imagination. I hope he is getting paid for it because that took a lot of work.

Re: Dogs climes tree can u stop it

David ,I’ve corrected the wrong dog by mistake a lot of times, young or old I can’t see any negative affect. As long as they associate e training with discipline I see no problem with their game getting desires. As I said, some dogs I wouldn’t worry about. But I have hunted some smart and sensitive...

Re: Dogs climes tree can u stop it

Just a heads up: think about the effect on the other dogs when you are disciplining a dog (ALWAYS). I see this training mistake by people that have had hounds for decades. The other dogs next to him at the tree can hear the tone just as good as the target dog. Some dogs are smart and extremely tone ...

Re: Dogs climes tree can u stop it

If you want to help isolate the climbing behavior from the treeing behavior, tie a long check cord on him and stand back and wait for him to show climbing desire. Then as you shock him and scold him you can also jerk him out.

Re: Dogs climes tree can u stop it

One could say this is the worst fault a dog can have because most other faults don’t kill the dog. Plus the hunter puts his own life in danger at times trying to get the dog down. I still get a lump in my throat remembering one of those times. And it wasn’t my dog, I was trying to save another man’s...
