Re: Coon Hunting

First thing is a good compass and learn how to read and never argue with it. I have 2 alpha but still carry a compass. Have a good head light and a spare in your pocket. It gets dark with no light and it’s going to happen to you at sometime if you hunt much at all. It’s pretty simple, take dogs to w...

Re: Video I happened across

Dogs show a lot more potlicker than the southeastern fox hounds of the same time period. Most of the voices were more houndier.

Re: Split Race

I don’t know much about a silent dog other than it can really damage a good race of any kind. Anytime I have one that starts silent or starts going silent with age, it has to go. I had much rather have a babbler in the pack. Sounds like you are running a unbalances pack. Balance your pack with the t...

Re: Dogs Loading Up

I’ve decided over the years that I must be a jinx to people that have complete control over their dogs. Every time I load up with them, about 10 min. In the hunt they are running up and down the road screaming, that dogs has never done that before. I’m sitting in the truck thinking, if he ever did th...

Re: Dogs Loading Up

I have usually hunted from 6 to 14 dog packs over the years. I have never had an entire pack to loadthemselves. Usually from 1 to 3 never will load. The best dog I’m hunting now is 7 and has never loaded. She comes to the tailgate and stands. As long as most load, i can load a few myself. If one is ...

Re: rig box roof material

Al, I never have been much of a rigger, I had rather road. I found rigging to be up and down to much for me. I’m hunting 6 dogs now and I think all will rig out of the box. Not sure because I can’t recognize each dogs voice in the box. A rig for me is a box blow up, when I do stop and put down they ...

Re: rig box roof material

A dog can rig out of the box as well as on top. A good one will rig in the box crowed with other dogs and that rig is usually one you can start.

Re: Average Length of Race

I started to understand that I liked to hunt and listen to dogs run things in about 1950, I was about 10 yrs. old at that time. Most all the fox hunts I went to, the talk around the fire was what dog was in the lead. Never heard any talk or any interest who had a catch or kill dog. They wanted a dog...

Re: Average Length of Race

Lawdag, nobody in my area used hunting to thin out predators back in the day. If some was loosin stock of any kind, they used poison. Everybody had a small wooden keg of stricnine, probably about 25#. If they had to poison they usually let all the neighbors know to keep all the dogs shut up for a fe...

Re: Average Length of Race

I’ve coon hunted a good bit in South Louisiana and can’t recall having a ( LONG FAST) coon race. I’ve usually have a long slow coon race or a short fast coon race, long and fast races are usually been something other than a coon. Had a half red tick/ halftreeing walker that had a lot of one hour fas...

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

Cordell, this is a description of a coon hunt with two good hounds and a cur dog. Cast all three and the hounds get in the dark and stay there until a good track is found. The cur will leave with them but will be back shortly. When the hounds have the track up and running, the cur will recognize by ...

Re: Suggestions for a hunting/ranch/kids dog

From what I understand in your wants, you can find it at the local dog pound. Collie crosses and Shepard crosses make good tree dogs. All cur dog breeds were originally crossed up on something they didn’t start out the way they are now. I really can’t recognize but two breed of cur that have enough ...

Re: Anyone in Oregon

I live about 4 miles south of the Catahoula registration office and they have been a customer for many years. The Catahoula is primarily a herding and yard dog. Some will tree but they are not used for that down here where they are plentiful. Never saw one used for treeing.
