Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

I think some guys make an honest mistake in selling a bobcat dog. They catch a lot of bobcats with there pack and according to what they see on the ground and on there garmin they are convinced they can sell this one dog out of there pack for thousands. They never hunt this dog by themselves they do...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

I am not in the dog buying or selling business but in my opinion a bobcat dog sold for several thousand should catch bobcats. I have hunted with quite a few hound guys and not all hunt like I do but I think everyone I ever hunted with would be able to catch game with my dogs if they bought them from...

Re: Technology

Garmin equipment is not nearly as durable as the old wildlife materials. It takes more maintenance changing broken antennas, keeping software updated and if it you are hard on equipment like I am you need a new handheld every 2 to 3 years.

Re: Technology

Perk, you must be the toughest hound guy in North America to be able to keep up with ypur dogs like that. A certain part of hound hunting was forever lost with the invention of the garmin but I would never hunt without it again. Couple weeks ago I was camping in Idaho and one morning my Alpha went t...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

One of my favorite lines in a movie was by Robert Duvall. In Days Of Thunder he says to Tom Cruise "See that hound dog over there? Best hound i ever owned and i never taught him a damned thing" I agree there is a lot of truth in that line but I also think cold trailing can be enhanced if ...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Yes I don't dispute the fact that bears move a long distance to go to a food source. In my opinion a bear is very food orientated if he has a good food source he will generally stay in an area until another source becomes available. While a cat especially a lion can travel 10+ mile overnight for no ...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Nolte, My guess is you probably got colder nosed dogs on bears than I do. Even though I catch more bears than cats in a year my dogs will put a lot more effort into cold trailing a cat then they do a bear. In the summer if my dogs are really grinding a track and they get it treed it always ends up b...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Nolte, what I was referring to more was about pulling the cold trailer out of the race entirely. Yes it is common practice for me to repack dogs on a hard runner. Sometimes on a 10 mile strung out race all you need is repack several dogs perfectly to have a tree in several hundred yards. The 24 hour...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Bear Hounder, if you ever have an impressive cold trailer do not ever pull him off a track on the next road crossing. The fastest way to ruin a cold trailer is not letting him finish a catchable track. Also if you are running off baits you should have a good idea how the bears approach and leave. If...

Haha, I have no idea how old the bobcat track was but I am sure it wasn't 24 hours old. My dogs aren't that good to be able to run 24 hour old summer cat tracks.

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

This weekend was hunting with a friend in Idaho. We were both in unfamiliar country and stopped at an intersection to look at maps etc. I rig my dogs loose on top and they were out milling around and all of a sudden I heard my one dog open up and I looked at the GPS and she was already 300 yards out...

Re: Serious Question!

With our deep snow my hunting is done pretty much all off snowmobile and snowshoes, I can haul only 3 dogs comfortably in my sled set up, so if I find a track over a mile from the truck I am pretty much limited to a 3 dog show. My dogs don't bark as much as I'd like. The first mile of a cold trail t...

Re: Serious Question!

JohnAdam, the issue may not be the change in the cat's scent but the fact the dogs are making a lose in the first place. How many dogs are you running? Do all the dogs contribute to the race? If you run 6 dogs are 2 consistently finding the track out of the loses? I would try to remember back to the...

Re: Tribal hunts in Montana.

Treaty's with the various Indian tribes 150 years by and large took advantage of the Indians. This day and age the Indians have been able to use these same treaties to now have more rights than the white men. There is no way that Congress would even dare to think about overturning these treaties, so...
