Re: Serious Question!

Al, What is your friend's definition of deep powder? Yes 12" to 18" of powder with temperatures in the teens is ideal bobcat catching conditions. Once you get to 24" to 48" of powder its a total different ball game. Bobcats have a lot better flotation on very deep powder than hou...

Re: Serious Question!

I have been to Oregon a couple times and I know my dogs would not catch 50% on the coast. I do think if I stayed there a winter my dogs would probably get used to the brush and maybe improve???? If I moved to the Oregon coast and my dogs would not be able to catch cats consistently I would be in the...

Re: Serious Question!

Mark brought this full circle, a lot of discussion on this topic I believe are rare conditions. Good dogs make bobcat catching seem easy. I believe in most areas a hound guy should not be satisfied with less than 90% catch rate on a jumped bobcat in reasonable conditions. If you are less than 50% yo...

Re: Serious Question!

Dewey, I never really had happen what you described but I do know that it happens by conversations I had with others. Couple years ago I was running a bobcat in the rain in about 4" of snow, everytime the dogs hit an open area they absolutely could not smell it but could really burn it in the b...

Re: Serious Question!

Though I do not believe in the theory of cats being able to throw or hold there scent I do believe an animal that freezes in place and doesn't move does not emit much scent. I can very well see how in brushy country a cat doing a lot of tight running and then freezing in the middle of it could seem ...

Re: Serious Question!

What Dewey is describing I believe is stuff that happens running in heavy brush. I have never run in the south so I don't know how that compares to conditions on the coastal range but it surely can not be worse. In my opinion hounds losing a jumped bobcat should be rare. Don't ever be satisfied with...

Re: nonresident snow lion hunting trip

cfanno01, Western Montana has probably the best lion hunting in the world it is however mostly draw and it can take years for a non resident to draw a permit. You can however buy a general non resident tag and chase in the whole state from Dec. 1 to April 14. If you want to just chase lions and not ...

Re: Best Dogs...

Well I always thought lead meant best or #1. Pick of the litter meant the #1 pup. I am always striving to have no #1 dogs I want them all to be awesome game catchers. I will let you all know when I get there. LOL

Re: Best Dogs...

Mark, Most hunters I have hunted with have 1 dog they use to start all there tracks or start all there strikes. I always assumed that was there lead dog. I mix it up a lot more with my dogs. Having multiple lead dogs may be how I have heard of one guy having a price for pick of the litter then heari...

Re: International Bobcat Contest

That is an incredible picture of that bayup. Would love to hunt bobcats that bayup like that. Our cats just scamper up trees around here. One of these days I will find the time to travel and hunt different cats in different areas.

Re: Best Dogs...

I never had a slow starter make a dog for me. My best dogs all were early starters. I get concerned if a pup at 6 months doesn't make races. I have noticed that there is a period of time between 1 and 2 where young dogs seem to go through a teenage period of being stupid. Before I get preached to ab...

Re: The Misfit Cat Hunting Thread

That track bugs me. It has always been hard for me to see a track and not identify it. In a picture you don't get the context of surrounding environment, where the track came from or where it goes. The cup helps, but it is really hard to get the size of it. In the first photo of it, I can see a spo...

Re: The Misfit Cat Hunting Thread

Great story. David gave you excellent advice on everything he posted. The track that you found that you didn't know what is looks like a trotting coyote track to me.

Re: International Bobcat Contest

Steve, So that is who you are. Thanks for the invite. I drew a unit 100 lion permit so I am kinda concentrating on lions right now. Treed 3 toms today, 2 younger ones and 1 older one in the 125 lb range. My hunting partner told me I better shoot it as I won't find a bigger one in 100 but I will eat ...

Re: International Bobcat Contest

Beebout it has been deadly on bobcats in his country this winter he is coming up here next weekend to hunt with me so I am concerned I might be sucking hind tit on races. Anybody know where I can purchase some white pepper?
