Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

Some good advice I received a long time ago was that hounds in general are a lost cause money wise. The best you can hope for is to recoup a few of your hobby costs by selling fur, a pup or hunt. Just accept the fact they are a money pit and the good they bring is the fun/experiences with having the...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

But besides from the con men. A lot of dogs not working out for the new owner is cause of the new owner. Probably more so with the older generation, guys who have it set in stone they know everything and there way is the way. Merlo, I'm not so sure it's an older generation vs younger generation thi...

Re: RE: Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

How many lions would I have started if I had old Buddy along today? Well from my experience the answer is always at least 1 more than we did. granted we might not catch it but I'd rather be trailing something versus looking for something to trail. Especially if that trail is something a guy s...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

I could tell stories about guys selling dogs on trial and getting them back messed up. I was one of them once. So it can definitely swing both ways. My dog was a hard tree dog with his belly to the tree style. Buyer told me he wouldnt tree. He had holes like all dogs but treeing was his best attribu...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

I have to agree with dhostetler and others. All good points. One thing that has happened is that happened with decent bear populations and trail cameras is we've had many more hot tracks to run our dogs on. And if that is what you run the majority of the time you'll never develop dogs that can cold ...

Re: PRICING A HOUND ?

Bill I understand your point but that is a lot to ask of a seller depending on the distance from where the dog is. Take this from a guy who has bought or sold exactly zero dogs over a year old or 250 dollars in the last dozen years. Some guys are swindlers no doubt. Seen a lot if junk peddled. But m...

How to add tt15 to astro 320

I've got a tt15 that I used on an alpha. I now want to pair it up with a 320. I've tried to add it by touching the two like I've done in the past but it won't let me. There is only 1 other collar on the astro so there is plenty of room. Is there another process or way to add a collar to a 320 beside...

Re: RE: Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Nolte, My guess is you probably got colder nosed dogs on bears than I do. Even though I catch more bears than cats in a year my dogs will put a lot more effort into cold trailing a cat then they do a bear. I don't know if I'd say that. The main difference is you probably don't try to cold trail bea...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

dhostetler It kind of depends but I will pull out a cold trailer completely at times and it doesn't seem to phase them the next go round. Now on a young up and comer it might but on a finished one it doesn't seem to for me. But I might just have some real rattle hard heads too :D . The reason being ...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

another question someone might know the answer to what happens to a track in the fall when you get a heavy frost after the bear has hit the bait this happened to me last fall and the dogs had a hard time getting it going but did tree that bear but at the starnt I thought it was a no go I'm asuming ...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

Bear Hounder, if you ever have an impressive cold trailer do not ever pull him off a track on the next road crossing. The fastest way to ruin a cold trailer is not letting him finish a catchable track. I don't necessarily agree with this. It is fairly common practice around here to pull a cold trai...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

I've seen dogs take sundown tracks sat 7 or 8 pm and be able to move them the next morning at daylight up until say noon. You don't catch them all but you never know unless you give it a whirl. Also seen the same dogs struggle at baits hit at 2 am tried at daylight. It all depends on conditions and ...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

I don't want shoot down any breeding theories here but there are 2 things at play. First is that regardless of genetics you, to make cold trailers you have to try and work on old crappy tracks. You have to give up almost guaranteed races to sit around and scratch your head. It can be painfully borin...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

As for tales of old, some have been stretched as a story always gets better with age on it. However, there is a grain of truth in them. Around here there weren't the amount of bear as now. Those old guys would look all day for 1 track. You didn't walk away from it looking for a fresher one. And if y...

Re: Cold nose ? Fact or fiction

There is a lot of good info in this thread but I might be able to add a few nuggets. First off, the hound world is plum full of bull$hitters. The taller the tales the closer you better watch your wallet. Second, it is almost pointless to talk hours old because it changes dramatically from day to day...
