Re: Genetics?
I think breeding by the moon was more of a making sure the female conceived not how the offspring was going to turn out. My grandad did everything according to the moon phase and for his time he was fairly successful with 40 acres and 2 mules and 2 horses and a few plows. He didn’t have a lot of spa...

Re: Genetics?
Don’t know what kind of terrier you are using but I raised and sold I don’t know how many southern rat terriers for about 7 years. Never line bred a female. I bred male to female for conformation mostly. Never had anyone come back dissatisfied. Most went for yard dogs. A lot went for squirrel dogs a...

Re: Lion Hound Trainer Advice
I’m 78 and hadn’t found any shortcuts yet. Sounds like you are on the right track when you say there is no wasted time on your part. I don’t think you will find anybody that is going to have interest in your dogs as much as you do. Regardless of the pay. Keep on keeping on and good luck. Forget some...

Re: Bobcat Dog by Dave Peightal
Blue dog, in my area ( I know nothing about your area) but I suspect it’s about the same. There is only a couple of people that I know that are what I call successful cat hunters. First thing these people wouldn’t ask for opinion on anything they wanted to do or listen to very much advice. If they w...

Re: Question for experienced bobcat hunters
Taylor, to find out what you are working with from the get go,hunt the pup by himself. Have him handle broke and start him in the woods around 10 months old. If you put him in game that you want to hunt he should strike a track, run the track to a tree and set down and tree all by himself. If he sta...

David, you have a way of scrambling an old country boys brain. I can’t figure out how I ever trained a dog.

Re: Hello from NW Montana
Dbibb5, the best bet is find the man in your area that had rather hunt than have a family ,job or anything of value except his dogs. Make friends and study. Stay away from big names, usually there is not much there. Or you can go find a few young dogs that you like the looks and keep them in the woo...

Re: treeing walker for fox
Goose, I guess there was a chance of that happening, but I think it would be a slim chance in Attala Co. miss. In the late 40s and early 50s.

Re: treeing walker for fox
I knew one foxhunter that fox hunted to kill fox. He started after midnight and started getting ahead of the race at daylight for the kill. Had a barn covered in fox hide. I don’t think anyone hunted with him but all the neighbors appreciated what he did as most people had a lot of chicken, turkeys a...

Re: Weyerhaeuser hunting in Oregon
I really have no idea what goes on in the western part of the United States when it comes to hunting mentality and why people do what they do. I know in my part of the southeast thefew cat hunters that really get after it year round are not doing much damage to the population. Most of the cats taken...

Re: Hound horns??
I grew up around just about any kind of dog hunting and can’t remember many times I saw a cow horn used, people always used the gun barrel, I bought the first one that was in my family as far as I know of. It came from Bill Boatman about 1961. Really good horn. Loaned it to a neighbor and he lost it...

Re: Hound horns??
A single barrel shot gun makes a pretty good cow horn if you need one and it’s at home. Find the sweet spot and it sounds good as a horn, a litter higher pitch but I’ve called a lot of dogs in with one.

Re: Before GPS collars, motor vehicles....
Typical deer hunt for me in southeast mississippi was leave out about 4:00 am, drive 11/2 hr to hunting grounds. We never had over 6 dogs and turned out 2-3 at a time in small blocks. Every body had leashes and knew how to catch dogs, if you couldn't catch you didn't get invited back. All the dogs w...
