Re: the .243 rifle and its load
The 243 is truly an American creation debuting just 3 years after it's parent case the 308 Winchester was premiered in 1952. 1955 saw the unveiling of 2 6MM cartridges the still popular 243 Winchester and the now obsolete 244 Remington. Both great designs that get some of their early promotion form ...

Re: the .243 rifle and its load
Never seen a guide carry a rifle to dislodge a stuck animal but I suppose it could happen. 45-70 Marlin Guide gun might be good for that. LOL! 243 is fine for what you explained and it is a sweetheart to shoot. You can get a Model 7 Remington that is light and short and in synthetic makes a good lit...

Re: Sight or sound?
I think I would have to agree on lions that sound is the biggest factor. I have maybe seen a dozen lions tree ahead of the dogs that were not what I call jumped lions or hard running lions might be a better description. Lions and most cats for that matter have tremendous sense of hearing and they ca...

Re: Black n tan characteristics
It is always a chore starting out with pups especially when you are just starting out yourself. A lot of us started out in this position and in days before there was so much information available on the net, it was even more difficult. I don't know how old your puppies are or what has been done with...

Re: Treed lion
Macedonia mule man, I have seen some of the craziest behavior in older coon dogs too. I had an old long eared black and tan years ago and he was one of the very best coon dogs I have ever hunted with. No ridge running crazy twisting jumping old coon could beat him after this old dog got wise to his ...

Re: Treed lion
Observe your pack of dogs, and listen to them. If you have a Garmin this may be a little easier. sometimes position in the pack changes over time on the track. Old top dog walker may have recently found himself looking at the rear end of a younger hound that is beating him on the track, and he doesn...

Re: Treed lion
Idcurs, Good info and like you said you just never know what a lion is going to do. Back in my younger and more foolish days I use to like to climb up in tree with lions and I got so confident that I would get right up there and slap them with my cowboy hat to make them jump. I had a few holes punch...

Re: Elbert & Vaughn bred Blueticks
Great story! My first really great hound also came from Elbert. I didn't get him directly myself another older man I hunted with was getting his dogs from Elbert and he had some complications in his health and due to emphysema he hadn't got to start this young male, he was out of Blue Mack and a fem...

Re: Weldon Hopman
cross of Finley river White Cloud and Nance, this is an accurate statement, but what Mr. Martell indicated the Michigan Bawly cross was the key. Weldon was very secretive about this cross and the story behind it is rather odd, but we will leave that with him. I was fortunate to get to know the man w...

Beware of DEAD LIONS
This subject flashed back across my mind recently while listening to and excellent pod-cast interview by Steven Rinella of Meateater fame , while talking to expert dry ground lion hunter Floyd Green of Arizona. They were talking about a ground catch that was made on a big tom, and the dogs were figh...

Re: Track size
Llewellyn and Oshkosh and up on Blue Creek. Love that country and I am sure I was in the bait shop more than a few times. Seems like a remember a monster Northern mounted on the wall. Been a long time now but I also caught a lot of big coon in that country. Yes I see the hunt is on the North and Sou...

Re: Track size
Great input RockyTrails!
Tanner, I don't know much about where the lions are in the Cornhusker State, but I use to deer hunt a good bit in the breaks of the North Platte in Keith County, and those rough breaks running down into those ash draws and field looked good.

Re: Track size
Lion tracks are always exciting to the lion hunter or really any student of nature. When you look down and see the tracks of a feline that is so cryptic yet large enough in full form to kill a bull elk of moose not to mention a man if it wished it does something to you. Maybe it is the feeling that ...
