coon fight

Hey...so I took my two dogs out to road them about 9:30 a.m., and dropped them to clean out. While the male was crapping he struck a coon and after a short jump race, they holed up what I later found out to be the biggest, nastiest ringtail on the block (must a been 30lbs.) they bayed him in three different locations and he wouldn't tree...but he fought the dogs hard for 45 min. I heard them scrap 3 different times and it sounded like battle royale then it got REAL QUIET
Anywho, when they came out of that nasty bramble mess, both had a few cuts on their faces. Any ideas on what to do for them besides clean them out? Not big enough for stitches, just don't want them to get infected or anything. How about bag balm? thanks.

take equal parts of liquid cut heal, allum and powder sulpher mix it in a bowl it bill be kinds like a slightly runny paste yellow in color dab it on and forget it,( you can cover it if it's where the lick it) works great for even deep tissue damage and i use it on myself if i get cut bad, i have seen it work wonders put some on a horse who had a bad wire cut above the back of his hoof it healed up and there riding him now the vet had told them way to much damage and he would not carry weight anymore but he was wrong and the people saved killing a good horse

fura-zone can be obtained an most feed stores. Sometimes in the horse section. Carona is another brand that works just ok. You can usually get sutures and pennicilian at the feed stores as well. Wonder dust is a good blood clotting agent. You know what look down further in this "health forum" and look at the "med Kits" post. There are a bunch of stuff in there you will want to get and the feed store is usually the best place to start. There are other things and ways to obtain medical supplies listed in that post as well. Ill bump it to the top for you.

Seemed like everytime I went cooning this year the dogs caught one on the ground. Had a few really good fights.
Mine get a Pen G shot that night (1cc per 10-15#.) And then again in the morning. Helped some. They all got chewed up BAD a few times. Had a few abcesses. But I just broke them open and drained them constantly (3-4 times in one day) and by the second day, continuing with Pen G shots, and some Betadine scrub on the wound. Good as new.

Clean them out and spray'em with BlueCoat, you can get at any feed store, all the other ways work real well too, but all that happens if they lick this stuff is there mouth will turn blue LOL, and it works real good.

Yeah...I've used Blue Coat before...have a can. None of the bites abcessed or anything this time, so they're good, thinking for the future if anything more serious happens. Where do you guys get the antibiotics (shots or pills?)? Do I just have to take them to the doc...that could get kind of expensive if I have to take them to the vet every time they get bit. Gotta' be a better way.

I live in cattle country so anitibiotics are easy to come by. If you have an atwoods near you ( if there is any out there) you can buy them in the store with no problem. I keep pinn-G and have taken it myself when i get somthing i cant shake. But you can call 1-800-648-5483 that is nitelite and they sell tetracycline and amoxicillin the tet. is 19.99 for 100 caps. and the Amox is 26.99 (page 51 in the catalog) if you cant find them cheaper on the web. But nitlite is handy and i have done a lot of buissness with them over the years..
Hope that helped and god bless

Thanks Waylon...that is helpful. Do you guys prefer shots or capsules. My dogs take shots well.

I think shots work faster and maybe a little better but i HATE giving shots almost as bad as getting them, the thing with pills or capsules is you can blend it with some small amount of food and kinda trick'em into taking it, the penn.-g at atwoods is like $21.00 for a big bottle (liquid) and as long as you keep it in the fridge it last quite a while just besure and shake it up real hard cause it kinda settles out after a while.I am no vet by any means but with three kids( i dont doctor them, well most of the time) and a slow economy i have learned a few tricks so if i can be of any help let me know,
God Bless and good hunting
