Lion hunting in NE, yup thats Nebraska

Postby akbruce66 » Fri May 31, 2013 2:44 am

On May 24 in Chadron NE the nebraska Game and Parks Comission held a regular monthly meeting. Most of the folks that came wanted to testify in favor of a lion season and the use of dogs to hunt them. There were over 20 so we were limited to 3 min only. So many wanted more than the 3 males or 1 female, as they think there are many more than G+P think there are.
Most of NE is in private ownership and by state law you need the permission of the owner prior to hunting. This means you need to know just whose fence line you are about to cross.
As well as too many lions there were complaints about too many antelope and too many elk.
Most folks in NE have never had to deal with an animal that could do them harm, other than cattle and they are not sure just how far the state will go in defense of lions over people.

Joggers, poultry owners, sheep and cattle producers as well as parents of small children are all seeing lions and finding out they will defend a kill.

G+P wanted to allow hound use for only the first 4 applications drawn as well as the one sold permit. That would be allowed in the second of two seasons. Most told them it was much easier to sex a lion in a tree. Due to the many comments a decision was postponed until July.
