Re: What do you run your dogs on?...
This may not be the right place to ask a question, but I'm gonna do it anyway since it sounds like you guys know what you're talking about when it comes to fast game. Had something weird happen today...I was tryin to catch a coon in my live trap to turn out for my pup out of cat dog stock (not running hounds) and caught a grey fox! I thought, "COOL!!!" and turned him on it in the cage. He bayed the hell out of it for ten minutes, so I tied him back and turned the fox loose in front of him and he ducked into the briars...I turned the pup (9 mo.) loose and he acted like he couldn't smell it, does it just take a special kind of dog to run a fox? He just didn't seem real interested after I turned the fox loose.

newby, the same exact thing could have happened even if you would have had a coon caught in there
next time, take you a bucket of warm water out there and dump it on the fox, dont even let your pup see the sumbitch and turn it loose and then just walk your pup out there casually
matter of fact, maybe road your pup for a few miles to get some of the piss and vinegar burnt off so he might act right when you take him for a walk out to where you released the fox, also make sure you put the cage up where he cant even see that ya know

Does the water just make the scent stronger? Now that you bring it up, the last time I trapped a coon, I did what you said w/o the water and he trailed it real good and as far as I know that was his first coon too. I just thought letting the game go in front of him might make him really run to catch the sucker, but it backfired on me. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Ya, it does make him want to but the problem is that he dont know how to and you got him so geeked that he aint using his brain. You can take a "good" dog, like an older one that is 4 or 5 that can absolutely run a track without problem and go like the devil but you aint gonna do it with a pup. I will give you an example here.
You take a 5 year old running hound and dump him out of a dump box on a coyote chase and he sight chases him into the timber a half mile away. Almost immediately when he loses sight of him he goes to searching for him with his nose cause he knows he has to and he makes the transition easily and away we go, no problem.
Now you put a 18 month old young dog in the same situation and I am afraid you aint gonna like what happens. He is gonna fire his ass after the yote but the dumb bastard is gonna get so worked up that he aint gonna know what to do and most likely is gonna piss away what could have been a good deal for ya. I hope that helps.

Good point...guess I didn't think that through all the way. Appreciate the help. I know he's got a good nose so ditching the cage and just taking him to the track will probably work. What if he doesn't really get fired up when I take him to the track though? Should I show him where the game was and sick him on it or just let him figure it out?

Just walk him in that area and let him get with it on his own. You jack assin around with him or tryin to encourage him really in anyway aint gonna do nothin but confuse his dumb young ass. Just let him be a pup and learn. The good ones were born good. All you got to do is take him for walks and shock the shit out of him when he runs a deer and then whip his ass for it if he dont learn from the zinger after a few and hope he runs what you want as good as he wanted the deer. LOL!
