Non res hound hunting

Postby Darby77 » Wed Jan 24, 2024 2:16 am

So I've been doing a ton of reserch. which states would it be possible to hunt black bear with hounds? I know idaho but the houndsmen permit is hard to get. What states allow non residents to hunt with hounds thats simple to get a houndsmen permit?

Montana does but it’s now the same as Idaho, gotta draw a hound handler permit for a specific area. I had a great time in New Mexico and everything was over the counter but as soon as the quota gets filled it done no training season.

Will do looking to go possibly 2025-2026 you can run in any area the head biologists of that specific area approves of but the guy I talked to said we could in his unit and didn't think you would have a problem anywhere else.

Wisconsin got rid of the hound permit can train as long as the season is open, but the tag is draw, doesn't matter residents or nonresident. The farther east ya go most don't have a hound permit that I recall but require a hunting license and tag for nonresidents to train or hunt during their season which is over the counter. Like West Virginia nonresidents can train from September or October to sometime in March can't remember when their seasons are exactly but they have a couple throughout there. Maine I do believe has a hound permit now but nonresidents can only run during their kill season and need a outfitter. Montana or Idaho would be closest for ya but if I remember right montana gives out less permits than idaho and it's zone specific like previously mentioned. Idaho is a bit better has a few more statewide permits, then a few different areas with different quotas and then two non quota areas which is over the counter and a two bear area. Ontario providence of Canada has a spring and fall season and some good running too just as a nonresident need a guide. The guy I used to go run at retired but was probably one of my cheapest road trips to hunt. But depending how far you drive or what states/providence you want to see British Columbia Canada, Ontario Canada, Alaska, Idaho Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, New York but believe it's just a training season, Vermont, I believe New Hampshire, and Maine; I might have missed one I don't know all the rules I listed some I have experience with but I would recommend double checking with the DNR for each state, and one of the states on the east coast has a rule if they can't do it in your state you can't do it in theirs haha I found that interesting it's either Vermont or New Hampshire I think. Hopefully my rambling didn't bore ya but some info and please correct me if I am wrong

I always thought it would be a good and not an unreasonable law to be able to hunt any Nation Forrest anywhere in the USA with any state license. Example: I’m a Louisiana resident, I should be able to travel to any state and hunt on any National Forrest as long as I had a Louisiana hunting license without buyin a non resident license from that state. It goes without saying you would hunt under their game laws not your state laws. Some young Senator hunting something to do shout jump on that and get the ball rolling.

Well although national forests belong to all of us and I get where your coming from there isn’t a chance the states, especially western states would give up all that income from nonresident tag sales.
