Don't believe everything you hear
Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
Well I've got some bluetick colored dogs that aren't slow by any measure. They started out a bit low on game and grit but that didn't take much to fix. Now I'm kinda thinking of trying to dial it back. Then again I've seen slow white dogs to. If you have the time and resources you could by ten dogs of any breed and get every type. Sure there's generalities but they aren't rules. Remember american hounds are split on color more then type.

I swear I hang around too many walker guys... that's who told me to ask... I have seen more slower dogs in the bluetick breed... and I coon hunt... with them.. But I figured there was faster bluedogs in big game section.

Following is the most common thing I have heard around hound guys.
Walker guys say: Blueticks are slow and track straddlers.
Bluetick guys say: Walkers are hot nosed false treers.

Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
I've hunted all the breeds over the years and each one has its strong and weak points .What you have to do is pick one that suits you and the way you hunt .Some guys have no preference and just hunt what catches game.My best dogs have been grade hounds with a strong shot of bluetick and b&t in them .My best registered dogs have been Smokey River (Diamond Jim blood) or blues with S.R. in them.I've also seen Hammer and Cameron that were good .I'm speaking of bobcat hunting with them.I like a blueticks independent nature and their never say die attitude which i readily admit some guys don't like.I can't count the times i've seen a ole blue dog separate from the pack and tree a cat and hold the tree with other dogs trailing all over the country side.In the end you just have to find the dog(breed ) that works for you.

Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
I have run with quite a few Hammer blueticks and currently my best strike dog is a Hammer bluetick. The 2 Camerons I hunted with were dumber than a box of rocks but I doubt that is true for all Camerons because of the amount of Camerons out there. Yes there are real good lines of bluetick bear dogs out there. I found a line of walkers that I really like so my long term plan is to eventually have a pack made up mostly of Loose Bruce Walkers.
Currently my best cat dog is a walker/hammer mix but she looks like a full bluetick. I always liked to run her on cats especially with diehard walker guys. She was never outshone on a cat race until I ran her on a bobcat with Art Ragsdale's dogs.

Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
This is my opinion but i believe it to be accurate. The majority of dogs in any breed are just mediocre to average type hounds .I define a average dog as a hound that needs help to tree game . I've seen lots of dogs that looked awesome when paired with the right dog or dogs but were almost worthless when they got off by themselves or were hunted alone .These types should never be bred but of course they are .I estimate that 5 to 10% of the total hound population are above average to top dogs,so when you get into this game and start looking for hounds that can tree something you're probably going to try several dogs before you find a good one .

If you find a really good one in several tries you have done good, and sometimes you are looking at way more than several. good post 1bludog.

Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
bearsnva ,i thought about saying"numerous" instead of "several " but thought that might discourage the newbies in this sport. Its nothing like the anti's think where you just get a hound and start catching game .For most of us it takes a few years or thousands of dollars to start having some success .
Re: Bluetick Bear Hounds
In all fairness to the dogs i think you need to put about the same percentages on hunters. Ive seen a lot of special young hounds get ruined by the person hunting it. Ive also seen above average finished dogs get sold and are completely ruined in a matter of months.
