Often hunting lions in the southwest we end up in some very treacherous and potentially fatal positions. So consider these:
1. Take flashlight and then take a back-up flashlight as well. Today technology has allowed for us to purchase very small but powerful LED flashlights, and these can save your life if you get caught in a bad bluff situation and the sun goes down. Also man, many times out here we end up baying a lion in cave or an old mine shaft, and you have to get in there to get the hounds out and get to the lion if you can. Let me tell you from experience it is far from a pleasant experience crawling in a hole with a lion you can hear but you can't see. Sometimes these holes are shallow but some gone go in considerable distance and crawling in a space barely large enough to get thru with a growling lion ahead of you is nerve racking to say the least. If you have a powerful flashlight you can shine it in the lion's eyes and this will usually freeze him up.
2. Earplugs you cannot imagine how loud a barking bunch of hounds can be in a tight situation such as this, it can addle you brain. Also if you have to pull you pistol and go to shooting even a 22 Magnum in a tight spot can deafen you and cause permanent hearing loss. A 357 magnum will just about pop your eyes out! Safety glasses would be a good idea too.
3. A heavy pair of leather gloves. Usually in these holes you will find spiders, scorpions and all kinds of sticker things that pack rats drag in like cactus bits. Don't forget to check around for rattlesnakes too because they like these same places.
4. A length of light nylon rope. this is very useful for many things making a hasty leash, dragging a lion out, and even helping you get down from some place you climbed into.
5. the usual other things like waterproof matches, and maybe a fire starter, and a first aid kit if not with you close by in your truck or saddlebags.
