My name is Dallen Toerpe and I've been running hounds for my whole life started with my dad before I can remember. My dad was a Bear Hunter here in california but after that was outlawed he gave up the hole sport entirely. I took over his pack at that point and started running varmints. Over the last couple of years all of dad's old dogs have passed, I was lucky enough to have gotten pups out of them and most of them are between 2 and 4 now and some dandy varmint dogs. My issue is that I only kept females witch kind of screws me as far as keeping his line going. After talking to him he told me that some of his original blood came from Steve Matthes dogs so to keep his line going I would like to find someone who still has Matthes hounds who wouldn't mind selling me an uncut male to breed with my females.

Where in California are you? I don’t have a male for sale but may be able to work out a stud deal. I have a high tan Trigg walker with a little Plott in him that’s almost two that is fast, trees hard and has a good cold nose. I am in Cottonwood which is near Red Bluff.

Re: Looking for new old blood
That maybe hard to find as the guys who have Matthes dogs keep them pretty close.I believe Blue Milsap has dogs that go back to Steves dogs but don't know his feelings on letting pups go .He's in Northern California i believe.

Beastmode that is an amazing looking hound. If he hunts half as good as he looks, you are a happy man.
Dallen, you have a good looking pack. Are those the young dogs you have now? I would recommend you do some more research before you decide to try and breed back toward Steve Mathes line. His dogs were bred for lion. You are hunting varmits. Your dogs do not look like any of the Mathes dogs I have known. I would try to get some more info from your dad and see what other influences might be behind your young dogs. If there are more California varmit influences, my opinion is that is the direction you would be happier with unless you are wanting to mostly lion hunt. If you could get names of some other California breeders from your dad, chances are good you could find some of that blood to breed back into.
