I am new to this site and coyotes are fairly new to my area. I am looking for any feedback that i can get on trapping coyotes. preferably in foot traps. i live in eastern nc. i have trapped foxes in the past, so i now a little about trapping, but would like to pick the brains of some folks that know the ends and outs of it. Thanks in advance

There are a lot of resources for information. I have found the videos on youtube put out by the Kentucky dept of wildlife to be quite informative. It has been 35 years since I trapped my first coyote and I have caught over 800 since that first one. I don't check this forum everyday but you are welcome to pm me and I will try to help you get started if you still have questions after viewing the youtube videos.

HI , If you really want tolearn how to trap 'yotes get in touch with Craig O'Gorman of Broadus , MT. He gives on the line instruction and can cut the learning curve down by decades . PM me and I'll tell you more

he [Craig] use to run a trapping school. catch a 1000 a season. order his sale book [5.00] but 50 dollars worth of info in it. I think he has a ego problem but he can back it up.

Hey Frog , Went to his school and there is now way that a person can absorb the knowledge he presents. I think he is more protective of his knowledge verses an ego problem and he is resentful that more than a few "arm chair experts " have vitually stolen info. that was presented in the 40/50 by the likes of Vern Dorn, Bill Nelson, and the Griggs. and attempted to pass it off as there own "Discoveries" . He does have one of the most complete trapping libraries . Regardless he can back -up all of his claims w/ pics.

I went to Craig's school as well. In my opinion, he can probably catch most anything that walks across the ground. In the evenings I watched hours upon hours of gunning coyotes from a chopper. Any information you can get from O'Gorman would be valuable.

Working Coyotes is like anything else you just have to bail in and take your losses and learn from them. I work on coyotes here in WY year round and take vacation to hunt lion and bears. I do a lot with the planes and choppers in the spring and when things get drifted in Winter. I've been trapping for 17 years only 5 yrs full time and still have a lot to learn but I'm lucky enough to get to see a lot of different scenarios and work with large numbers of animals as well as several different species. ADC work is a different game than fur trapping but if you're proficient at trapping fox you have a good start. Number 1 is location, location, location when trapping anything and coyotes are no different. Number 2 is use good equipment because coyotes are a lot tougher and fight harder than fox, in general. I'm a huge fan of flat sets and urine sets because I hate to dig holes when the ground is frozen, but dirt hole sets are good also. I just prefer to set my equipment and move on not chip frozen dirt or waste time during the summer when I've got ranchers losing livestock. I use Russ Carman's Pros Choice, Magna Glan, Russ Carman's Canine Call, gray ghost, and O'Gormans plenty coyote but a lot of lures work very well even a lot of home brews do the trick. For commercial bait it is hard to beat O'Gormans powder river paste bait but then again its like the lures a lot of them work some more for one guy than another try a variety and stick with what works for you. Good Luck and have fun!!

I have a friend here in Ark. that was taught by Bill Nelson and when Bill died my friend[Harry Wright] had a lot of bill's books on making lures and Bill's wife wrote him and ask for the books said she need the money and Harry sent all of them to her and she sold them to Craig I was told. his pretty wife makes all the lures.Arkansas trappers asso. had a big library of video's and a lot was of O'Gorman and I got them and watched them over and over.another one is good out of Mt. is Peterson, I use to stop off in Ogden Utah and talk to Terry Montgomery owned Montgomery fur co. and he use to trap with Craig said every morning at 3am he left out. before fur was was high Craig showed some Ranchers how to trap and next year[fur was high] they would not let him trap on their land, now that a A-hole that is why the 300 mile radius he has,My buddy skined stretched my yotes but Craig said wash them in Woolite and comb them, told my buddy he said hell with it, mine brought over $3 more then his just like washing your hair in a good shampoo. Now if I was young and was going trap Mt. here I come straight to Craigs.Lord you would knock off years of mistakes.Lot trapper got mad at him up here at the convention in Mo. because he wanted for all the guys that was putting on Demo to charge 5 bucks, heck he drove from MT to Mo.I didn't see any thing wrong with that.I used a lot of Russ's lures, that powder river paste would catch catfish.

Hey Frog , From What I know You are a 100% correct about the Nelson Lures . Craig always has given credit where credit was Craig showed how to skin a 'yote in less than a min. As i've said before you couldn't go wrong w/his instruction. Always wanted to take some from Slim Pederson as well

For anyone just trapping the easthe's the go to guy IMO. He also is a Master beaver trapper ,Especially under ice. For those that are able or need to trap under ice.

hahahaha I Googled O'Goman's phone number to mention something about the line he's got on our place. My wife and I had a good laugh. Just an opinion, but Craig has a hell of a sense of humor about himself. Men that big you would prefer with a sense of humor. If you've been to his school you've probably eaten at our restaurant and may have been on the ranch. Craig eats a lot of lamb and if you can't enjoy the irony in that, you have no joy in life. His wife Dana was only mentioned once in the comments, but anything they've gotten and any protectivity they may display over their business, they've earned. The local butcher once helped us work sheep and was amazed that there wasn't a coyote mark on them and no dead ones in the pasture. Between our Akbash dogs and O'Gorman, we never lose a lamb to coyotes. Thanks to all of you who hunt with Craig and recognize his great skill. You help keep him in business so you and he can help keep us in business. You are all much appreciated. Now, would some of you please come hunt these mountain lions?
