Need input on a snare set up

Postby hillbilly boy » Mon Oct 24, 2016 4:52 pm

So I have seen this set up in a lot of old trapping books and and wanted to see if you would think it could work it a hole dig with bait in it with 4 stakes put into the top rim of the hole with a snare lop put over the stakes the idea being when something like a fox or coyote puts it paw in the hole to get the bait the lop is closed as it pulls back out so does it sound like it would work

You need to get some new trapping books. While that might work, there are lots of better ways to snare coyotes. Baited sets are usually better suited for foothold traps. Snares are suited to trail sets, and are at there best on fence dig unders.

Whatever concoction you put down that hole, a very large percentage of coyote will have absolutely no interest in eating. Some might try to dig the hole, but probably more will just walk up and look down the hole to satisfy curiosity, or pee on your hole to tell all the other coyotes that some idiot buried something down that hole and expects a coyote to eat it. The foothold will work in all of these instances.

Those old books are good for entertainment, and for a glimpse into the past. Those people used those methods based on the equipment and knowledge available at the time. There are entire forums dedicated to trapping, and after this latest but short lived uptick in fur prices there are all kinds of books and videos, based on modern knowledge and equipment.

Pretty much all the info you need is on line if you look hard enough. Snaring has come so far in the past twenty years it barely resembles what it used to be. There are many people in coyote areas catching 80 coyotes using nothing but snares; no steel traps at all. I met one who only blind sets, but every other one I have met pre-baits ahead of season. Snares are set as far from the bait as is practical. 100 yards away is common. When the coyote gets close to the bait all his alarm systems go on high alert. Not because of you, but because he has been ambushed by other coyotes and predators competing for food. Free food means possible danger. His head goes down also so he is harder to snare.

Cover every possible route into the bait at that distance; the outside edge of the funnel of trails coming in. 12 inch loops. 10 inches off the ground.

You mentioned you have an opportunity to go with a relative by marriage.

Do it!

Sell everything you have and figure out a way to go with him for at least a full season and more if he will have you. Work hard for him and make yourself an advantage for him to have around. Consider it college and pay the price to go.
