Haven’t been hunting a ton due to work and the kid wrestling but still catching a few. Puppies are doing well, the smaller one made his first race a week ago at 5 months old. I wasn’t going to let him go but he was voicing his extreme displeasure at being left in the box so I let him go figuring he’d just run around but he jumped right in with the boys and off they went. I was happy to see him at the tree trying to figure out why his best buddy wouldn’t play with him  i recently got to go on a lion hunt on the crow reservation, had a good time but we only caught 1 lion in 5 days. Really cool country, lots of bobcats but the lions just weren’t around.

Shoot that sounds like a good week though. I have been out three times, trailed lions 2/3 times. First one was a bare ground possible jumped track with my females. They took it about 3/4 of a mile until they made a lose they couldn’t pick up. But they did really good for their first bare ground track!

The second was a tom, female track in 2” of snow that I found at 12:30 but it melted out by 1:30. The dogs worked hard and were able to push it about a mile until it was just completely gone. But now I know there’s a tom in the area!

I made it back to look for those lions. We cut a small female track right at sun up. I put my females on it and they had her treed in about 30 min. They trailed for about half a mile then jumped her. She ran another 1/2 mile then treed. It was the perfect race for my females. It took me over an hour to get to the tree because the terrain was miserably rough with snow and ice. We climbed over 1100’ in elevation. It took my 2 buddies another hour and a half to catch up. So after they caught up, I let them take pictures and catch their breath. Then I jumped her once for the dogs. It was a 300 yard mad dash down hill and they had her treed again. That’s when shat got strange…

The dogs went quiet and ran 400 yards side hill then treed again. I assumed she just jumped and treed again. I got to the tree and was immediately confused because it wasn’t her up there, it was a tom! In my excitement, I didn’t pay attention to the dogs when they were wandering off downhill. Now I understand why they kept wandering down hill a hundred feet or so.
Anyways, I told the guys as they were getting to the tree that they weren’t going to believe me and they were going to think I’m crazy because it wasn’t the same lion in that tree. It took me a minute or two to confirm it was a tom just because I was still in disbelief. But after that, I told my buddy that had a tag he was clear to take it if he wanted. So he made a great shot and the tom went about 150 yards straight down the little draw before piling up. We had a hell of a time pulling him off the mtn with all the ice and no straps or packs. We used belts and just drug him because someone would have gotten hurt trying to pack him down that NASTY mtn.

That’s awesome man. Sounds like those gyps had a good time and did a real good job.

Sounds like a good day rowdy! Trailing conditions were rather tough yesterday, deep snow in the bottoms and patchy on the south faces. 10 degrees at daybreak and warmed up to 40+by 10am. Managed to catch a small female very low, almost in a pivot yesterday in the afternoon. Turned the boys out and they picked along until they were about a mile out and in some treeless bluffs right above a pivot, all of a sudden they were coming down their back trail wide open and veered off and treed 100 yards from where I turned loose and only 19 yards off the road  gotta take the easy ones when u can lol

I went on an adventure to New Mexico for my first time going south west dry ground lion hunting. Had an amazing trip with great friends! We didn’t catch anything but trailed everyday the weather just refused to cooperate. For the first time I saw a lion and wasn’t able to catch it due to sustained winds of 55 miles per hour and gusts to 73. The lion had killed a deer in a driveway on a lake shore and man there were 4ft whitecaps rolling over the damn! But being in that beautiful country was more than enough, dogs acclimated faster than I thought they would and were starting tracks well by the time I left. Already can’t wait to go back!

Sounds like you should’ve been flying kites lol. I’m glad your dogs did well and you enjoyed it. The wind has been crazy everywhere I believe. We haven’t had much rain and with this wind, summer is going to be brutal here.
