Re: drahthaar for bear
if i ever start hunting birds, i will deffentally be gettiong one of these. that way i could still run them with my hounds. they look like a great hunting dog. i wonder how they would be with some hound breed into them, for a colder nose, and what not
hound hunting isnt a sport, its a way of life

In Finland they have mix our finnish hound and german pointers. One litter was called black demons, because they usually tend to be black using drahthaar and gritty as hell. Speed is the thing what you get using pointers, but pups may be totally silent runners. That is from first generation, but im not sure what happened on next generation.
Here is a short video where one is used on hare hunting.

Hope you all enjoy.
Great Photo Kyle.
PS.
Please dont consider crossing Drahthaars.
Just find grittier hounds. The crosses have less nose than hounds and less grit and versatility of DDs.

Re: drahthaar for bear
I've got a Pudelpointer and a Wirehair in my kennel right now. Both are coon and cat killing machines. I haven't taken them out just hunting coon yet but plan to this spring with my BMC pup. All their kills are critters we've come on while bird hunting or training. I had a DD for a few years but preffered the PP for what I like to do. They are good dogs but I found the Pudelpointer (PP) to be more trainable and to have a better temperment with every bit as much grit. I've trained several DD's since and still feel that way. That said they are great dogs and I don't think a guy could go wrong with one, we all have our own opinions though. I have several friends that run DD's and swear by them. They all catch and kill fox and coyote with them every year. I think any of the versatile breeds will work if you train them right and get the right line of dog. The DK (German registered Shorthair) is a great breed as well. I had a little GSP that was 35lbs soaking wet and he was one of the grittiest fur dogs I've ever seen. I watched him tangle with and kill a 40lb coon and took out a 50 indian dog that was coming after me while training one day, I'd left my pistol at the truck. Damndest thing I've ever seen!
If you're wanting a DD for hunting feather and fur make sure you find a breeder that breeds for that. They all have standards they have to meet but some breeders mainly hunt upland, or waterfowl with them. Look for a breeder that uses theres for fur as well to make sure you get what you're wanting.
Sorry for the lengthy reply. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I know of a few good DD breeders that hunt fur with their dogs. Be prepared to loosen your wallet a bit though, their not cheap!

Re: drahthaar for bear
To illustrate my point, these hogs and bear, were not hunted with DDs bred by VDD breeders that focus on fur, but on balance and versatility.
A testiment to the VDD Breeding program.
