Awesome video!! I really wish they would allow dogs in the hunting of wolves here in idaho. Would be intense for sure! Just goes to show that it has been done before and could be done again. It wouldn't take long for the sound of a hound to send wolves running away instead of after them!!

By the way, wolves in russia are larger on average even than the brutes we have here.

Oh hell yes, that is a great video. I'd like to see the states that have wolf problems allow this type of hunting.

those are steppe wolves from central asia & ukraine, a medium species that lacks the aggression of the big canadians introduced into the western states. there are modern videos of hunts in Khazakstan. the big subarctic russian/siberian greys are no bigger nor any different in personality from the big greys bought into the rockies. they could be taken but it'll take more dog than those dinky little tazis in the video & plenty of them.

Great video! Thanks for sharing that one. I would love to see wolf hunting with dogs brought back. We need some big dogs like the Kangal from Turkey or something like that.

Russia has a long and well documented history of wolf hunting with dogs, not just on the steppe, but throughout most of its large expanse. Every detailed source i have been able to find has stated russia/ siberia has the heaviest wolves on average in the world. Not trying to minimize the size of our wolves in ID, but 2010 average size of adult male taken was right at 100lbs. Important thing to remember is the borzoi they used didn't usually kill the wolf, but would all bite and hang on for life until the hunter showed up to dispatch it.

siberia covers pretty much the entire region from the urals to the pacific & the arctic to the gobi desert. in that area MOST is populated by small & medium species like the steppe, caspian, iranian & himalayan wolves.
the russian nobility did most of their wolf hunting from dachas in the Ukraine where they chased caspians & steppes. they went so far as to import steppe & caspian wolves for canned hunts around moscow & st petersburg.
the traditional technique for hunting the large arctic/subarctic greys was to stake out a bait animal (old wasted work horse was preferred) & shot the wolves as they killed the bait. prior to the advent of firearms, trapping w/ spring snares & deadfalls w/ horse meat for bait was the primary method of killing.
the native siberians, like the hanty & mansi used a single laika to track the wolves & the hunter would shoot them. still their primary killing technique was also trapping.
hunting the big greys w/dogs always involved terrible losses for the dogs.
likewise all the wolf killing livestock guard dogs come from places where they face small & medium wolves that DO NOT use the large pack structures. additionally the small & medium species lack the inherent aggression & tenacity of the the large greys. all of which is why red wolves are not a problem in NC.
the alaunt gentile & the original bloodhounds hunted the medium/large wolves of germany, poland and such, but they used large packs & took terrible losses (the hounds more so than the alaunts).
Alaunts were probably the last "breed" to take down bigger wolves w/ any consistancy. anything since then has been an anomoly (freak occurance).
if we develop dogs to take them consistantly, we'll be the first in hundreds of years.
