3/8/2013 | Press Release
Assemblyman Donnelly's AB 1230 Referred to Committee
Contact: Cassandra Joiner (760) 244-5277

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly announced that his Assembly Bill 1230 has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife. AB 1230 will repeal SB 1221 (Yee), which banned hunters from working with hounds to pursue bears and bobcats, but exempted government from the new law.

"Dedicated citizens came out to oppose the hypocritical and purposeless government ban imposed by SB 1221 last year. They were ignored. I am excited to give their voice another chance to be heard," said Assemblyman Donnelly.

During SB 1221's hearing, many hunters expressed concern that bears that would normally be let go would now be shot. The dogs were used to corner bears to give the hunters opportunity to see if they were young or pregnant, in which case, they would be let free.

Further, SB 1221 meant the State would have to increase its own bear and bobcat hunting efforts, as many hunters could be deterred from continuing the critical service they provide in maintaining safe levels of these animal populations.

Assemblyman Donnelly continued, "AB 1230 will reverse the intrusive and harmful policy passed last year and restore the simple freedom our citizens enjoyed just months ago - to go hunting, safely, with their dogs.

SB 1230 is awaiting notice of a hearing date.

Lori Jacobs (CHC president) is working with Donnelly's office and will be updating everybody on Saturday at ELK CREEK as to where, what and when we will be needed, be prepared for the fight at the Capital again this year, it is sounding like we are getting another chance at SB 1221 so for everybody that thought this bill would never pass and then seeing that it did you need to get involved in any way you can and not sit back and watch to see what CHC is going to do, if you stepped up and worked on SB 1221 last year thank you, if you didn't HERE IS YOUR CHANCE

I am most interested in hearing the update as well, if CHC could send it out to the email list used during SB 1221.
Reading the text of the proposed bill, I am not seeing how it cancels out SB 1221. But fortunately I am also not a lawyer.

Don't pay attention to the bill text it will be up-dated, this is a gutted bill that was changed from Endangered species and threatened species to the repeal of SB 1221, our hero Lieu did this with SB 1221 it was a clean air bill until HSUS got invovled, they will do this when somebody has a bill that has been introduced and they have something come up that will give them more attention they will change a exiting bill

"The more I learned, the more uneasy I became. I started to realise this wasn't a small clique of weirdo inbreds delighting in cruelty, but a tradition, embedded by history and profound community and social liens, that was integral to a way of life... Fox hunting mattered profoundly to a group of people who were a minority but had a right, at least, to defend their way of life." - Tony Blair

"This is a dispute we must win, having long ago ceased to be about the fate of a few thousand deer and foxes. It's about who governs us. Us or them? -Chris Mullin

Hooray for AB1230. They can keep me and my hounds out of the woods when they pry the leash from my cold dead hands. And to any HSUS terrorist monitoring this post, have a nice day.

Iam ignorant to how your previous law was written before they banned the use of hounds, but this bill looks halfway decent, except for section 396, paragraphs 1, 2, 3 which allows them to "dispatch" your dog if they think it MIGHT harm an animal it is chasing out of season.
