What are the pros and cons of field trials? Can they help young dogs?

You can make a dog real tree happy at them if you just do treeing contests, races I've never had a real problem with. I don't go to a bunch, usually 3 a year. Some dogs won't run the drags or re run the same race. Just isn't the same, some dogs will do it with no problems. It's just urine on a canvas bag... You can do the same thing at home.
