Bear hounder, you really should watch some of the videos of the Norsk elg hunds in Norway and Northern European countries. (Norwegian elkhound). Elg actually is the word for moose so the elk in elkhound is misleading. It is a mixture of translation and transliteration. They should have left it transliterated elg hund or translated it "moose hound", in my opinion.

Any way, those dogs were bred for centuries to do the correct thing with moose. The correct thing for a hunter on foot is for the dog to sneak up on the moose, (track him silently) not cause it to bolt, and call the hunter without getting too close and causing the moose to run. They bay it, so to speak, but they understand the mooses comfort zone; will let him feel like he is hidden, while calling in the hunter.

This made it possible to harvest the moose without the aid of motorized transportation to follow all over tarnation.

I sure wonder if a good cow dog or two could learn to herd that thing right to you.

Is is legal in Ontario? I know in BC you can't use dogs for moose or deer. You will find that hounds are not the choice breed for moose. Check out what David said, there are a lot of great moose dogs in Norway and Sweden.

The laika are used on moose in the Russian area. YouTube some laika moose hunts. They bay very good and actually try to move the moose for a good shot.
I've had my laikas bay whitetail bucks during the rut when they want to stay and fight

If you want to bay up a moose fast you should get a spitz dog. If long races is OK your hounds will probably do fine on moose.

Halfhounds (spitz X hound) was quite popular here in Sweden some time ago. Now a days it most pure spitz dogs that are used.

Breeds that are used are:

Jämthund - this is the most popular moose dog in Sweden. Most of them finds the moose by winding.

Gråhund (Norwegian elkhound grey) - Is the second most popular breed. It's a little bit smaller than an Jämthund. Also finds the moose by winding. But many of them also can cold trail up a moose. An old saying is a poor jämthund is useless but a poor gråhund you could at least track with.

Karelian bearhound - Most of them are moose hounds but a few are good at bears. This breed have had more health issues than the others. A small breeding stock is one problem.

East siberian laika - Is more allround than the jämthund and gråhund. You have less chance to get a good ( read acceptable) moose hound in this breed than if you try a jämthund or gråhund. On the other hand a real good laika is hard to beat. Many who buys them is hoping to get a dog that also can bay a bear.

West siberian laika - less common in sweden than the east version.

Russian Europian laika - are only a few of these in sweden. Looks much like an Karelian beardog.

White moosehound - this is more a white version of the jämthund.

Hälleforsare - Is a young breed. Some laika blood in it. Have red yellow colour.

Hedehund - a local breed, not so many of them. Far between good ones.

Svart älghund (Norwegian elkhound black) - Small in size. A specialist most used on leash. The handler can see on the dogs body "language" when it smells moose upwind. The handler give the dog sign to stay. The handler stillhunts in to position to shoot the moose (or fallow deer).

Some Finnspetsar (Finn spitz) and Norrbottenspetsar (Norrbotten spitz) have also been used for moose hunting. But those two breeds are mainly bird dogs.

Wow thanks alot for the very helpful replys today was the first day of moose season over hear in ontario in the area that I live that is . And yes it is ok to hunt mosey and deer hear with hounds actually when you buy a hound license or dog license to hunt dear it is 12 dollers per dog and that covers white tail deer and moose
I was surprised to hear that you couldn't use hounds in b.c. for moose or deer but anyhow thanks for double checking that with me .we had available today 1cow tag and we could also harvest calfs so I went to an area where there was a cow spotted the night before 5 min up the trail I saw a single moose track I looked it over and I thought it was either a cow or small bull maybe but most likely the lone cow we wanted so I got dog number one out of truck that was peter his mother is plott his dad was a mixed bread looked like across between lab and German Shepherd or rotriler or something unknown .when I dropped the tail gate I could tell he could smell it so I turned him loose and he went staying on the tracks looking back every 50 feet or so to see if he was in trouble so I told him good boy a few times and he headed out then I put spunky down on the ground and he followed peter spunky is a cross dog aswell his mom was half plott and half walker his father was plott and black and tan . Spunky is only 1 year and a bit old. peter is three so there they were gone on their first moose tract they were moving fast on the gps and after about 15 min they were heading to the lake they swam the lake and we headed to the other side of the lake around the bumby rd by truck we got their to late they were headed toward some big timber with no roads I thought this is bad then they swung and we're going to cross the trail ahead of us so I put the gear shifter up in to drive like you stolder gear and shure my foot to the rug and we got up their in time to see the lead dog cross the rd off the crown over onto the high mucy muc privet side he was following some big moose tracks that looked more like bull tracks now than before and they wet going right down threw all them fancy cottages so I said to my son run down to the lake he's going to swim again try to get a look see if it is cow or bull it was a bull we pulled both dogs of and watched him swim the lake the hounds were up set that we pulled them butt without any bull tags that was the end of the chase I am hooked on moose hunting with hounds so tomorrow lord willing I am going to find a cow and calf track and try again thanks again for the help. Does any body know we're to get some of the moose hunds in canada I can't get any this year butt I'd like to have a couple to stand training soon any idia what any of these proper moose breeds are worth thanks again I've learned of dog breeds from you guys I've never heard of . sorry for the long story I tried to keep it short

Great story! Keep us posted.

There are a number of Liakas that have been imported to the US. I don't know if the Norweigian Elkhounds in the US would still be any good for Moose, but there are some that have been bred by hunters who came here from those parts, and I believe it is Virginia where there was still a pocket of hunting bred elk hounds.

Mr. Petty on here has the liakas and has studied deeply on the spitz dogs, and would be the one to talk to about imports into the US. I will try to find a link to one of his threads. He also writes a column in the Full Cry magazine.

So today we had a hard day we drove every trail I new of in moose country and even found some new ones I never been on we were desperate for a moose track specifically a cow and calf track I was shure that just around the next corner their would be afresh Track we didn't find one single track the rain wiped out old tracks and their was not any new ones so the hounds did not get to run today it was hard to except but the moose did not move today any were I talked with others who still hunt and they all said they saw no movement or tracks either so tomorrow we will try again and if the moose don't cross the rd to come to us than lord willing I'm going to try to free cast them into the deepest part of moose country i can get them into my plan a is to drive the roads until about 10 ish if e don't find a track we switch to plan b and b stands for boat with a boat I will get dropped off at the end of the lake and walk the dogs about 3km threw the most remote parts of the bush this area is right smack in the middle of nothing Ness and no trails or rds and lots of swamps and marshes I've never been in their before but my bear hounds go threw this area often while running bears and I always dreaded treeing a bear in their and always wanted to know what was in them woods were nobody goes so tomorrow that is the plan s a and b We only have 6 day moose hunt in the south eastern part of ont. So I have so much I want to learn in a short period of time .this moose hunting with hounds is hard because their ain't no bait to run off of you got to find a track and one hot enough for my hounds to take they can take a bear track upto about 5to6 hrs moose I'm thinking should have more sent .they are a bigger animals and have large cent glands on their legs so maybe it will stay longer I hope any how lord willing we will find afresh tract and get on with learning the rest some of the questions that I have are 1. How far will moose run before baying up 2. How long will they stop for 3. Will a cow be quicker to bay up when she has calf with her then when she is alone 4.th will a cow with a cave be more aggressive than a lone cow or bull 5 how many hounds should I be runin I watched some utube videos of the moose dogs and they are running one ore 2 dogs I don't want to get my good bear dogs killed or even hurt on moose hunting so if 2 will get the job done then that is what I'm hoping for ND the less dogs I run on moose the less dogs that will be tainted in my bear back I don't want to be chasing moose in bear season either any how thanks again I looked up that regency you gave me about the guy who hunt coons with the moose dogs thanks I'm also going to check out the Spitz dogs u guys talked about but for now I'll have to be content to run a couple of my bear hounds for moose and o ya how do you put pics on hear keep in mind I don't have a clue how to run a smart phone so directions will need to be very specific and red neck a proved thanks so much good night

Good story Bear hounder, the first day sounded just like a Florida deer hunt. I know it was a blast! Some days are also like your second day. Good luck, keep us updated.

I love your writing Bear hounder. Where you been all my life. Rofl

Red neck a proved. Lol.

Keep us posted. You have to now, or we will figure we lost you to the Nothing Ness. I figure that has to be a relative of the Loch Ness; or "Nessy" as Napolean Dynamite referred to it.

Well I have had a day that I am not shure how to describe I guess I'll call it a terrible success I woke up full of high hopes for the day the weather was going to be nice and clear .the moose did not move at all yesterday so I was shure they would be on the move threw the night I just had to go find a cow and calf track and let the hounds do their best so the guy if been guiding have the cow tag and as their guide it is my responsibility to put them on good runways well t 8am as I'm cruising a log looking for tracks one of those guys calls me and says cow is down so after the gutin and sawing was done I had to go home get the canoe and paddle up the river to bring the moose out and this took 2 trips up and back and of course we had to find no less than three baker dams to wiggle over a couple times had to get out stand on dam and push over all in all it was one of those beautiful fall days we got the moose out and it was a real blessing for shure butt. It was hard to take the dogs out of the truck it was now about 4 o'clock their was no time to get the boat in the water now it apear to be a bust for the hounds so I decided to try somthing the idea of going to bed without having given it our best shot did not set well with me we had almost three hrs of a beautiful day left so I drove to the spot where we had stated the bull track and started walking west to ward the back side of the lake that the bull had swam hoping that their would be acow and calf in the area and if not I would be pleased to run another bull if that's all we could find so we walked until dark and no tracks that we could get going found cow and calf beds that looked 2 or 3 days old some cow and calf droppings but at the end off the day no moose chased I did however let the hounds have a taste of the dead moose the weather man is calling for 2 days of rain around hear so we ae gang to keep huntin lord willing rain or shine their are only 6 legal days to hunt moose here and three of them are gone that all I know so it was a good day but hard to see the hounds not getting a chance to answer those questions I had and still have to night thanks again keep lookin up
