Becoming a houndsman
Becoming a houndsman
Hound dogging is sure tough. Never a bad day being out with with my dogs but some times it just gets me down. Been hunting 2 years now actually started to have some success this year treed 2 bobcat and a lion this year. Funny to think a year ago I thought 'cut a bobcat track and it's as good as in the bag'
Re: Becoming a houndsman
Congrats. I am just getting started. Got me a blue tick about 12 weeks old now. He has good lines and is bred for bear and bobcat. I posted a thread looking for some help on how to get started, and got no help. So I have been winging it. Waiting till the pup gets a little older and the going to let him run with a friends hounds.
Congrats and hopefully I will be as successful as you when I am two years into it.

My blueticks 2 now it takes a good year for a dog to grow up and start really working a track. I thought mine was a dud at 6 months then it was like hitting a switch nothing is more important to her then tracking a cat.
Re: Becoming a houndsman
Good to know. I really hope that happens with mine as well.
Do you keep your dogs indoors or outdoors?

Re: Becoming a houndsman
Indoors mostly. A good houndsman needs to trust his dogs completely I think. More time you spend together the better.
Re: Becoming a houndsman
Good to know. Mine is inside as well. It’s a new breed for me. So I’ve got learning to do. Thanks for getting back with me. Hopefully will be able to start training in about 3 months when he is 6 months.
