Re: Let’s talk.
Man you have had your work cut out for you it sounds like. Why do you want full cuts? Do you not like the hound/cur crosses? Just curious, I have a family of dogs that carry hound that I hog hunt with. Full cur and full hound didn’t give me what I wanted consistently. That’s why I went to the cross.

Lawdawg, I’ve just always been drawn to curs. I started coon hunting with terriers and I always felt like curs were a step up towards big game. Plus I like to do things the hard way. I really want to see if I can get it done with curs. I’ve seen it done but trying them yourself with out a finished dog is another level of difficulty

Re: Let’s talk.
Lol, Nufo I understand. I agree that starting from scratch is a definite challenge. Everyone has their own flavor and that’s a good thing in my opinion. I remember when my best friend and I were kids. We wanted hog dogs but didn’t have a dime to buy anything. We had and tried about every breed out there so long as it was free. We went in partners on our first “bought” dog. It was a pup about 12 weeks old that cost us $30-$40 dollars total. Man we thought we had just made a major investment. Turned out that we had. She was a Cracker Jack hog dog. By the time she was a year old, real good 3-4 year old dogs had better be on their game or she would make them look foolish and if she every got ahead of them, there was no catching up until she had the hog bayed. We did A LOT of training and if we weren’t schooling young dogs were were hunting. 5 days a week and on the weekends we went morning and evenings. When you put those kind of hours on a dog, they usually make a hand. We probably screwed up more than we made truth be told. We finally started hunting with some older guys that we were smart enough to listen to. That was a game changer for us. One of them had one of the two best dogs I’ve ever been to the woods with. After hunting regularly with him, our bar was raised. That’s what led me to the crossbred dogs.

Nufo, are your curs vocal on reack? Do you prefer open, semi silent, or silent track dogs?

My Stephen’s are full open and my mountain cur is semi open but since she hot nosed seems like she’s full open on bears. For cats she’s pretty quite until there jumped

Re: Let’s talk.
I see. Do you think they push the average track faster than a hound?

Re: Let’s talk.
I don’t think I can answer that. My buddy’s lead dog can move a track really fast and certainly takes colder tracks than my dogs do. But when the track is hot, my dogs push him for the lead but the difference is he’s never coming off that track. You’re either picking him up at a tree or cutting him off where as my dogs will eventually give up on the track if they think it’s not gonna get caught. They are pushing further and further though as they gain more experience. Hopefully by the end of fall season I can answer this better for you

Well, I’ve been in this new house for 8 months and I finally got finished building a three stall kennel for these trashy mutts of mine.

Something has been wrong with the software for a long time so no pictures can be posted, hence I have a YouTube channel to share here!

I can’t really complain since I don’t pay for anything here, but I was trying to make it where people don’t have to go watch a video. Pictures say a 1,000 words, or something…

Oh I agree, I spoke with buddy and Jason when it first happened and it’s never been fixed, kinda can’t blame them considering most of the time it’s just myself, lawdog, and rowdy bs’n. Been a little more action from time to time lately but I think most people have gone to the ol Facebook and I refuse.

Re: Let’s talk.
I’m the same way about FB. It’s like most anything else. You have lots of people complain about the knowledge or skill set of hunters/handlers/dog people or the quality of dogs that seem to be more and more prevalent. Many of these people they complain about are green or haven’t had an opportunity to hunt with experienced quality hunters/dogs. They could learn a lot by reading from so many of the people that read on here but choose not to participate. My way of thinking is that I love dog hunting of all disciplines. If I have something that works for me, then I’m going to pass it on so that someone else can try it. It may or may not work for them depending upon their unique set of circumstances but then again it just might. Maybe them tweaking my idea helps them. In any case, if it helps the sport then I feel better about it. I can’t complain if I haven’t tried to help though. I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy hog hunting for 30 years if the old guys that took me in hadn’t been so willing to share what they knew with me. I guess it’s kinda the pay it forward mindset. As for the pictures I wish we could post them, but at the same time, sure as anything some knuckleheads will try posting something that shouldn’t have been posted or something that could be used against the sport because the novice anti’s tried to put their twist on it. Hunters have to be smarter because our world is getting dumber and more ignorant by the minute.
