Yesterday should have been an amazing day as well, had a lion on one road and bobcat on another. Collared up the dogs at the top of the road with the bobcat on it and had to wait an hour for daylight to get turned out. On my way down found where a little female lion crossed behind me. Went and chased the bobcat first but it dropped in and out of the snow in the low country so I picked up the dogs and headed back up to the lion. Dogs had her treed in about 600 yards and she had just killed a yearling mule deer and dragged it up the mountain 100 yards. She was still all jacked up and treed low snarling and swatting at the dogs and bailed as soon as she saw me. They treed her again 80 yards across the road. Moved on to the first lion I found, turned out and the dogs went a mile into open country and made a loose, made like 6 big circles and came down their back trail and veered off heading my way but up their creek so I drove to the end of the road to find that the female and 2 about grown kittens had had a party all over the road since I had been there at 5 am. Dogs trailed 2 miles behind the gate and treed, after a nice hike and shitty climb up to them with lion tracks going every direction I walked into a slick tree which doesn’t happen very often. Them not catching a lion wouldn’t have bugged me but treeing with nothing caught sure ruined my day!

Shoot, at least you’re getting out! I’m about done with my dog kennels but I’m also having truck problems. Put a brand new 250 amp alternator on my truck so I can run my winch without overdrawing on the stock 90 amp alternator and the damned thing went out in less than an hour of driving while I was on my way to work last night. Luckily I drive to work the night before, so I don’t have to get up at 2am. I didn’t get to the station until 10:30 last night so that sucked. But after I finish up these kennels and fix my trucks I will start hunting hard. Gonna try taking my oldest out on horseback and see how she does. She’s excited to go riding with me.

Sounds like a great time! I’m sure she will have a blast! I had an absolute miserable hike yesterday to a small Tom treed, snow was waist deep and at points as Deep as my chin. Considering on my end of the mountains where I live there is absolutely no snow and even in the low end of the drainage I was in the south faces are dry. As soon as I get to the tree, the snow in the trees there was only knee deep. The cat bails down hill. Dogs tree it in a 100 yards, but it wasn’t wanting to stay put so I tried pulling the dogs but my buddies dogs weren’t on my gps so it was a chore. Luckily he camp trudging up the bottom from another direction and heard me hollering and toned them back. I was soaking wet and frozen at the same time  no way I would have made it back the way I came !

We made a hunt Friday and Saturday. Had a buddy from Alaska that has family here call ask if I could find time to get him and some buddies on some hogs. We made it happen and with a crowd! I think Saturday there were 14 of us, lol. Friday we caught 3 loner boar hogs with my nephews two bay dogs and two catch dogs. Saturday we took my two bay dogs and a barely started young gyp as well as the same two catch dogs. We caught 6-7 and then several little pigs. The guys had a blast.

On another note, it’s fixing to get uncharacteristically cold here. Any tips on what you guys that are use to it do to keep your dogs warm?

Sounds like a great outing!! Finally getting snow and today we are getting down to colder temps. Just keep plenty of straw in their houses and they will be just fine. I don’t use large houses so that their body heat keeps their small house cozy. I’ll give them warm water in their food so they are consuming enough liquids. Yesterday finally had a 2 cat day!! Turned out on a small female track and walked into 2 subadults treed about 100 yards apart. Went and turned out on another track in the afternoon and got whipped by the wind but still a good day!

Law: congrats on a successful hunt! It seemed like every time I took someone out we would get skunked. But as soon as they would leave, I would catch a hog lol.

I agree with Joe, give them extra bedding and make sure the opening for their houses are facing with the wind and not into the wind, if you can.

Thank y’all. I do those things already, plus my dogs all bed together as well. They run loose in a dog yard all day everyday except for feeding time. Once they eat I turn them
back out.

I’m no cat hunter, but what I do know about makes me believe seeing two and getting on another is a pretty dang good day.

Rowdy, as many hogs as we have, I would probably get rid of these pot lickers if I couldn’t produce hogs for them, lol.

Hi all,
I'm looking for advice on a new pup. I hunt mainly bobcats in northern Colorado and can generally get on one every time out if we get snow. I had three dogs. Lost my female walker a month ago. My Plott is now 13 and just can't do it anymore. I wouldn't call him cold nosed but he was smart and fast and could workout rock piles by himself and keep the chase going. He caught alot of cats for me. I'm down to my 8 year old walker. He's the kind of dog that runs well with others and holds a tree great but just isn't lead dog material. Ive been going out with friends and family and their dogs do well on lions but it's obvious the only reason we caught bobs consistently before was because of my old plott.
I'm looking for a pup. I'm not bent on any breed but would like a dog with brains, a decent nose, good speed and determination. I want to give myself the best chance at a good bobcat dog so he's got to come from a bobcat line. I put a lot of time into my dogs and expect a lot from them.
Any suggestions on breed and a trust worthy breeder?
Thanks,
SASS

All depends on what you like, but I would probably look out in Oregon or Northern CA, I have a number to a guy in Oregon I got a couple of really nice females from and he is a hard cat hunter. Also I know there is a guy in Colorado that used to be on this board that hunted lion and bobcat by the name of Tim Morgan, I think he went by the handle ridgerunners, I don't know him personally other than posts on this board but you could probably find him on FB.

Thanks, appreciate the input. I don't do any of the social media but I got my daughter on it. She has already come up with more on facebook than if have found in a week of web searching. I'll do my best to pick the right one but in the end there's a bit of luck involved.
Thanks again.

I had a great day today, turned out on 2 bobcats traveling together at first light and finally caught my first bobcat of the season, long hike 80 yards!! Then hit another road and had 2 lions so dumped on them and the dogs crossed the road a few times then pull up treed 10 yards off the road and have a little female bobcat! Load the girls up because they wouldn’t leave it to continue the lion race. Took 2 of the males up the road 300 yards and got them going and after they crossed the road like 8 more times a nice 600 yard hike to a female lion! Not to shabby of a day if I don’t say so myself!
