Brett: Take your time looking for a pup. Hunt with the noted hunters in your area that raise a litter once in a while. Learn what type of dog you want to hunt before you get one. In most cases don't take a free one. Be prepared to buy a shock collar also and learn to use it properly before you use it. There is a lot of older hunters out there that enjoy working with new people. Listen to them and stay away from game that is not legal is this state. Dewey

browningcowboy91, if you are looking to get into this hobby, i would suggest to buy a finished dog and save yourself some frustration, time and money. Then when you figure out if you really like this stuff buy a pup and he will get lined out with the help of your finished dog.

There is no such thing as a reasonable priced hound.....you are gonna spend more money then you could ever have imagined if you are serious and get after it. The difference is, you can spend it up front and catch game or you can spend it buying equipment and training a pup and "hope" that things work out.

Hope that things work out for you. Best of luck, jason

Hi Brett, there's truth and wisdom to Mike's,Dewey's and Jason's post. The pup road is a rough one[if you don't have alot of experience on the game you're after].If I were to start over again, here's the way it'd go-find a succesfull, ethical hunter on the game you're after and hunt with him for awhile.See what kind of dog you personally like and get along with. Then have that person go and help you find a finished or clean broke dog.Start catchin some game and then add to your pack as it lacking-treeing,striking,cold trailing etc. You'll be happier and successfull quicker this way than any other.last but not least don't gauge your success on STORIES you hear from other hunters unless you actually see it happen for yourself[you'll hear big numbers and you'll wonder why it's not rolling that way for you]when the fact is 90% of the game is caught by 10% of the hunters[guys who are dedicated and persistant-i.e.have or become more knowledgeable as time goes on].And remember this is suppossed to be fun.

These guys are giving some good advice. The first pup I ever owned did not get a very good start. I put him on some game but he didn't catch much. It was very tough for me to get started. I think it is easier said than done to find a good, ethical, experienced hunter to tag along with. I don't think there are that many out there that are looking for some one to hunt with. Just my opinion.

If I were starting out today, I would try to find an older pup trainer and a started dog. Older dogs are fairly cheap, and if you buy a good started dog from a decent guy, you are alot more likely to have your first dog turn out.

I would definitely try to tag along with an experienced guy if you get the chance. You mentioned you were getting into this with some friends. If your friends aren't experienced you can tag along with me a little next winter. Not saying I am some sort of great hunter, but you can get an idea of how some of us hunt. I hunt the northern end of western Oregon.

well these gentleman gave great advice, i have recently got back into the hound bussiness after being out for 3 years. Let me tell you i isn't cheap, and i personally believe in buying a finished dog for what game your after. Cat dogs are a breed of there own know maybe i have been lucky by weeding through the bs or people are raising better dogs but i have purchased 8 dogs know. all of which where sold to me as finished cat dogs, and all of them will catch cats but they aren't cheap. I think you should do a little research before you jump into the sport. Andthen if you are still interested in getting into this JOB because a hobby it aint. then go with a guy who has a dog your interested in a see the dog first hand or buy it on a trial. but there is more to this sport then turning dogs loose and treeing game. Like striking, TRASH breaking, ethical harvest practices, tracking box and list goes on. Well good luck on your adventure let us know if you have questions theres enough of us thats been hunting for years that would be more then glad to give you advice. BUT dont ask me my dogs chase deer (lmmfao)

Good responses to this man's post.

I'm surprised though that no one pointed out that is not a hobby, it's life changing addiction. I feel that I was born addicted since birth, but did not come full circle until about 4 years ago. This addiction takes all your time, money, and patience to a level that is impossible to put into words.

Tim made an excellent statement = 90% of the game is caught by 10% of the hunter's. That is so true, and if you are lucky enough to hitch a ride with one of those hunters, you will know why. I have had the pleasure of hunting with a well respected cat hunter named Curt Preston, that is in that elite group. I had no idea of the level of commitment, patience, and trust of the hounds it takes to consistently put cats in the trees. His drive, heart, modesty, and the dedication he puts into this sport is reflected in the hounds he hunts, and the cats he puts in trees. I hope that one day I can be half the hound hunter that Curt and that 10% are now.

That being said, I would not be hasty in starting out. I made all the mistakes new people to hunting cats will make. I got two pups and a young dog, had no clue what made a good dog, thought this was easy, could just hunt on the weekends, and that I knew more about the game I was hunting then the dogs. Looking back now, I can't believe I didn't just give up, but again, it's an addiction not a hobby.

What finally did it for me was getting a good solid broke catdog that could rig off the box. I was prepared to spend the kind of money it takes to get this caliber of dog, and I was lucky enough to have that dog even be available to purchase. I prepared myself for a week of trialing the dog, and as soon as I saw him work, I knew he was the one. Keep in mind, it took me over a year to find this kind of dog for sale. These dogs rarely become available, but if you are aquainted with the right guys, you will have the opportunity in time. It also worth noting that a finished rigging Bobcat dog is in the range of $4000 dollars or more.

In conclusion, if you really want to fall into this addiction, find an addict who is willing to share his/her time, knowledge, experiences, and then hope, pray, and beg that dog that will get those cats in the tree becomes available.

Good Luck,

Marc

I looked at the last litter-Mike raised[Nice quality looking hounds]who come from a long line of catdogs on the mothers side, and if I remember Mike said the sire was an exceptional dog.

One thing that has not be mentioned is the dedication to your dogs that this JOB requires. TO put it plain and simple I have never seen a fat marathon runner win a race. so if you dont have the time it takes to properlly excersize your dogs or hunt them at least 3 or 4 times a week. You will need to do as I am doing by hiring someone to hunt your dogs when you have no time available to do it yourself. Now this is not cheap I understand but you will get more out of your dogs if you put more into them. If you dont have time or money. You might just wanna become friends with a respectful houndsman and learn from him before you buy dogs to just have them waste away in a kennel/ or chain.

All great advice. I'll tell you, me and my buddies all got in this together years ago too and we bought a pile of newly weaned pups and had no finished dogs. it took us years to get anywhere but I will tell you this: we had a ton of fun getting there and boy oh boy was the first lion ever worth it! It is a long long and oftentimes unfruitful road but I'm a fan of raising and hunting pups. you will screw up so get a pup that has more big game sense in his blood than you do...Heck, I've been at it for going on 15 years now and I still think I'm screwing my pups up but they teach me a lot and the bond we have as a pack is unbeatable.
