CANT tree a cat!
Im 16, I have a female black and tan and my buddy has two walkers. We have treed a good bit of coons but havent caught a cat yet. Well get a strike and the will run the track then either lose it or tree but there is never a cat in the tree. not sure wat to do. Any suggestions?

Re: CANT tree a cat!
Keep Hunting them.. They are tricky.
Not that I'm any expert on Cats by anymeans, but we've had a few that took hours to find in the tree (one of them was actually only 10-15 feet above our heads in a brush pile but we kept looking over him, it wasn't until he moved that we seen him).
The second part, I always want to see the cat before I pet the dogs up becuase I'm sure some of allot of my tree were just that False tree's .. It's easy for the dogs to tree on hard loose is there is allot of tree bred into them.. I stopped hunting a dog because of that reason, If he looses a track he's looking for a tree where there shouldn't be a tree, He just hangs up and decides that it should be there somewhere when the cat is long gone.
Someone told me it takes 3 years to make a cat dog and 5 years to make the hunter.. (or something like that)
So.. if that's not confusing enough Your one step above me..

A man is not very smart that can,t find his wife 2 jobs.
And any wife should be able to support her man and a pack of hounds.

Don,t feel alone on not catching a cat
Re: CANT tree a cat!
I hear you man. This is my first year hunting hounds, I've treed some coons, but them cats are tough. I would just keep putting them on as many cats as you can, and I would say eventualy they will get it done. This being my first year I could definatly believe buddys statement about 5 years to make the hunter. No matter what though it's cool to have them dogs in the woods trying, I would rather chase cats all day and not get one then tree coons but that's just me. I just know that if I keep em going eventually I'm gonna start figuring stuff out and so will the dog. Good luck and keep after em.
Re: CANT tree a cat!
when the dog trees look at surrounding trees have had the dogs treeing and the cat was about 20 feet way in another tree the wind was comin down to the dogs just right and from were they were they could smell the cat. and cat hunin aint easy thats way its cat huntin if it was easy everyone would do it lol.i use to go with a guy that would not stop untill he at least got on one cat his goal and thought processes was if everytime he went out he wanted his dogs to smell a cat he is one of the top cat hunters around and catches a lot of cats every year. grantit he hunts like a maniac and sleeps in his truck alot. good luck dont give up you'll get one what part of oregon you huntin east side or coastal/western
cant never could

Re: CANT tree a cat!
Guys, 1 out 10 outstanding dogs can tree a bobcat.1 out of 100 can do it consistantly.Cats aren't smart just very hard to track.Thier habits are very tough to figure out.It takes a very intelligent dog to do it right.Don't use more than two dogs at a time. They can't let things get sloppy when chasing a cat.Too fast is not good.If they are making losses that cat will know it and never tree.Locating one is even harder for a dog.Don't give up!!When you make a cat dog, everything else is easy!
Never quit!

Re: CANT tree a cat!
I think it can go back to how a dog was trained. Lots of people train the pup to tree by sight. (Something in the tree you can see.) When pup can't see it, what do they do? Use nose or keep looking with eyes? Well it takes the brain to link both. I sometimes put animal in breathable box so scent only escapes. Now nose only. Also, experience solo gets rid of the just jump on a tree at the end of the scent trail mentality. Like everyone has been saying its hard to find a cat in a tree. Strong locating is a must for at least some members of your bobcat hound pack.

The truth is your dogs will never catch a bobcat unless it pops right up a tree. you dont have the right dogs for the job. keep them if you want for coon, but my best sugestion to you would be get a bobcat dog, and start from there. your coon dogs i am imagining are opening up and barking too much on a cold track. this means the cat has done so many circles around them they will never get it jumped and runnin. they may heat up the track which with the dogs you have seem like there runnin, but there not. once they make there final loose they are probably grabbing a tree from where they lost it and thats where you have your false tree. you might not like my thoughts but im not trying to be an A hole its just how i see it. happy hunting

Don't get discouraged keep after em and sooner or later you and your dogs will figure it out or atleast get lucky like i do once in a while. After time you will see maybe you do need different dogs, but i would stick it out for a little while at the least. Someone gave you a good tip earlier check all the surrounding trees very well before leaving upset you may find it a couple trees over. Good luck and hope to see you with a cat in the tree soon.
Foxcat how long did it take for you to get one in a tree, With a hound you trained? Or did you try it a couple times and say to yourself i need new dogs these dogs will never tree a cat? Or did you buy a finished cat dog?

Re: CANT tree a cat!
actually all three. have a really nice treein walker, but he blows up a track so no good on varmant. yes he might catch one here and there but i wouldnt be able to go catch 40 or so fox with him and thats what i like to do.. you cant train a dog not to blow up a track its in there blood/breed. thats why you wouldnt use a runnin walker cross dog to run in a coon contest. they wouldnt open damn near till it was caught. ive heard of crazy long coon races but you wouldnt get that from a runnin cross because they dont open on a cold trail. why do you think the best houndsmen in the country run runnin cross dogs on varmant? is it just a fluke?

Re: CANT tree a cat!
No i agree about the runnin dog crosses, 3 of my 5 are walker trigg crosses. But the kid is 16 years old and you flat out told him he will never catch a cat with his dogs. You for a fact dont know that!! Maybe he does need different dogs but that is for him to decide. Yes your opinion is welcome, and should be, just like evryone elses. I just dont think it's right for you to tell him he will never catch a cat with those dogs. If i were him i would be out there night and day trying my heart out to prove you wrong. Maybe i took it the wrong way. So are you saying a dog that's fully open will not catch cats? just a ?
I have noticed the coon bred dogs tend to be hotter nosed so they probably wont open a cold track anyways just a thought. I appolagise if i offended you, not intended. Have a good one DC

Re: CANT tree a cat!
foxcat, about your comment " the best houndsmen in the country run runnin cross dogs on varmant". That is much too broad a statement, and may be true only for your small area of the world or piece CA. There are a lot of very good houndsmen around that catch their share of varmints (cat and fox) with tree hounds. That is not to say that a dog doesn't have to put the pressure on the varmint to get him treed, but many of us don't have to mess around with running stock crosses to get it done.
What do you mean by "blows up a track"? Is that your slang for a dog that works a track hard but never moves it anywhere? If so that is simply a cull, just like a slick tree dog.

Re: CANT tree a cat!
Foxcat, You have no clue of how many cats this kid has has put down on or what the weather was doing or any other details. How could you possibly tell him that he should replace them if he wants cat dogs? Sounds pretty IGNORANT on your part. I think a guy should get more details before you make a statement like that.
